I always find trivia interesting. Unfortunately, many of the great American marques are no more. Packard, Marmon, Pierce Arrow, Franklin, Stearns Knight, Moon, Pearless, Winton, Auburn, Cord and Duesenburg. Regarding a previous comment that General Motors shouldn't be included, Cadillac introduced a valve in head V-16 while Mercedes, Audi, and BMW were still producing 4's, 6's and 8's. I have a 1933 Motor magazine that show a Supercharged Mercedes having a go at a Duesenburg SJ. It seemed Harpo Marx was convinced that his Mercedes could make short work of the Duesenburg. Well photos show the Duesenburg a good 20 car lengths a head of the Mercedes at the end of the race. When put to the test, American ingenuity is second to none.

I know this article is about the emblems, But in reference to Pontiac, I remember as a child we had a 63 Bonneville Coupe, I remember my mother would always say "Watch for the Indian Chief !" The Indian Chief was the high beam indicator light. I still think that was cool and creative feature and my ,brother and I would try to be first to spot it.

The Jaguar emblem isn't the auto company's first. Before the second world war, their name was Swallow Sidecar because they grew from a company that made sidecars for two seat motorbikes.
Their emblem was "S.S." which didn't go down well during the war, with all that Hitlers guard and that, they were loosing sales and so they decided to change name. They got their name from an earlier car they made called the SS Jaguar. They decided to use that cars name for the whole company. Interesting story indeed.

Hey Sick speed, I have to wonder how many of these foriegn jobbys you've worked on and I mean really worked on. I have had the opportunity to wrench on some of these cars and I can tell you that some of them are very poorly designed. Also, they are NOT designed for the driver to work on, they are designed by engineers for engineers. I personally wouldn't give you the time of day for ANY Mercedes Benz ever made, they're JUNK. Above all, you must remember one thing; they are all just automobiles made by man and are very prone to have many faults. As for the American Junk, I would take an American car over a foriegn car (except my 69 Volvo 142S) any day of the week. Also, I might remind you that alot of the foriegn stuff are running GM transmissions in them because they simply outlast the Foriegn stuff! You obviously are not a mechanic or you wouldn't bad mouth our cars.
