This hybrid stuff needs to stop, it's overly complicated and just not necessary. It raises the initial costs, but at the same time greatly devalues the vehicle because of the inherent maintenance costs (like new batteries) and underperformance issues. Suckers everyday are being sold on this crap, not knowing there are better options available. Options that are better for the environment and don't have tons of toxic batteries too. The U.S. needs to produce more turbodiesels like Europe is doing. Turbodiesels last longer (many last past 500,000mi without issues), use about the same amount of fuel as hybrids, and can run on clean fuels like bio diesel or svo. They can also run on a mix of propane or cng and diesel for even better mileage. The U.S. needs to change their fuel production methods also to make diesel cheaper like it is in Europe. Diesel should not cost as much as premium when it costs far less to produce. Europe produces 50/50 gas/diesel we produce around 75/25 which is the only reason gas companies charge more. Also taxes play a large part in both Europe and the U.S. prices. Most of Europe subsidizes diesel, we subsidize corn moonshine, aka ethanol which destroys gas lines and rubber gaskets and costs more energy to produce than it makes when burned. Of course all this is driven by greed and stupidity. Hopefully one day we can get most of the greedy politicians out of office and reduce consumer stupidity when it comes to these su****ects. When that day comes, if it comes, the hybrids left will simply be novelties of the past like steam driven cars.

2011 Fuel Econom Leaders: Your article makes no mention of the new 2011 Ford F-150 and their two new 6 cylinder powerplants which Ford says are industry leaders. I for one am anxious to see real world figures for both the 3.7L and Eco-boost 3.5L engines in detail with rear axle ratio's, tire sizes and details disclosed. In todays information age, I find it amazing how little real information is easily available, like the real mileage ratings for 3/4 & 1  ton diesel pickups along with technical information like tire sizes and axle ratios. Perhaps many don't care, but I think that when it's your money flowing into those gas tanks year after year, many would prefer to know the real figures and facts in order to help them make wise buying decisions.

To Sally57,it is because the Oil Companies are playing "pattycake" with the government! They are using the crisis over in the middle east as an excuse to gouge consumers at the pump. The Oil Companies do not wan't automakers to make cars that will get 80mpg because that will dip into their multi billion dollar profits!Since automakers have been making hybrid vehicles, they are trying to "compensate" for their losses. As a result, consumers like you and I get to pay for their greed. They are deliberately trying to kill our economy so they can bring in the "one world order".

Can someone tell me WHY American auto makers think it's more important to add the newest hi-tech equipment like TV's, audio, etc. to the interior of vehicles BEFORE they get the gas mileage issue fixed??  We have had the technical knowledge for years and years, auto makers KNOW HOW TO DO IT they just simply DON'T.!! WHY, WHY, WHY???  Even with the cars coming out now it's not as good as it could be.  What drives them to continue down this path....Americans are READY for cars that give good gas mileage and are priced right....can't they read the handwriting on the wall from sales figures of forgien made cars???  It makes me furious that they are holding back.  I prefer to buy American made, but when I can find a vehicle that is better made, has better gas mileage, costs less to repair, etc. from a forgien mnfg.  I go with that and so do millions of others!  WAKE UP AMERICAN MNFG'S AND DO IT RIGHT....we NEED good gas mileage AND fair pricing.  Don't cry about declining sales and going bankrupt when you can fix it yourselves.  YOU HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY - USE IT.

I live in Europe and diesel costs as much as regular. Considering though that some diesels get 66 mpg at the best I wonder why this technology hasn't caught on in the US.

Oil is all over the place. The only reason that we don't use our own is because the government is corrupt. They tried to figure out for years how to get gas prices up. Now they haven't built a refinerey in 40 yrs. Oh yea one in arizona to process our latin friends oil so they have gas to ship dope. They can build a ethanol plant in a year, yet not build one refinery. Gotta get them corn prices up along with everything else. I guess you are starting to get the picture. Every country that produces oil has cheap gas. We produce oil and have expensive gas. Something tells me there is a rat in the corn crib.

I am all for buying American cars and putting American workers to work. I think Ford makes a comparable car. I have a 2009 Toyota Corolla and recently test drove the Ford Fusion and I liked it. When I researched where it was assembled, it said Mexico.  If people think that all Fords are made in America, they are wrong. They are also outsourcing to other countries. I found that my Toyota was assembled in the US. I say buy American, of course, but find out where the car was assembled. Do you want the average American assembly worker to make the money or do you want the rich CEOs of American companies reaping the profits off the cheap, foreign workers?

hmmmm......own car free and clear, is in good shape, runs great, always taken care of, so in doing the math......what's cheaper ? Take on a 4/500.00 dollar a month car payment  to get better gas mileage or suck it up and pay the difference in gas and keep my old car where the additional expense might come in around 65/70.00 a month.

If you remember before Geo Metro, my Chevy Sprint would get 50 mpg city, 60-65 mpg hi-way, (best being 68 mpg from L.A. to Denver).  But the US didn't want sub-compacts, so they did not survive.

Keep in mind that this review is under TREEHUGGER. Hence the hybrid situation. Yet, this is still a horrible review. Like 40 MPG is good or something what a joke. I don't know if anyone can recall the gio metro back in the 90s, i dont quite remember either because I was really young, but I believe that the Gio got 50-60MPG, also for no where near the prices they charge now days for the same type of car with less MPG. In fact the prices for vehicles now days have become rather outrageous. There Pushing hybrids, this is also a joke. Why go half way, just go electric, we already have the know how to do it. Unfortunately, greed is what drives these people, and they make all there money off poor saps like us, by regulating every detail in our lives, even our vehicles. For instance a person backed up and killed a kid. All the sudden they are thinking about mandating that every new vehicle have a rear view camera, because one moron screwed up, thus adding to the bill at checkout. Here is an idea, make affordable cheap cars, for people who just need a means to get around, this also would help the job situation. In third world countries where they cannot afford the price tags we have, guess what they drive? Dirt bikes, and motorcycles, and cheap cars, sometimes 2 or 3 people on one dirt bike. Some motorcycles 200cc and down get 80+mpg, now thats awesome. Sorry for ranting on, but I feel as if where being taken advantage of more and more. Im a young man too, not old, but have seen enough changes in the last 14 years alone. I remember along time ago, when I was really young, around 1989, I saw the gas price and for some reason, this is the only gas price i have ever remembered in detail, it was 89 cents. Im telling you the truth, greed has grown out of control. Unfortunately all of our grown men in this nation have lost there balls, sold out, and have given into the easy way out. Cowards! Once again I apologize for the my frustration.
