The idea of electric cars is good but show me the numbers that make it work. Unless you live in a big house or drive a very small car I don't think solar is going to solve the problem. Friction isn't the issue with internal combustion engines, thermodynamics is. The conversion of heat to shaft power in a car is about 25% efficient. That number is around 30% for a coal fired power plant but you have distribution losses so it goes down from there.
I'm all for alternative power but I think all that oil we are burning to push big heavy cars around isn't going to be replaced by solar panels and windmills. Reducing the weight of a car is the place to start. It has a huge impact to the energy it takes to push it around. Show me the numbers. Just switching to electric cars doesn't change the situation much especially if you live by a coal burning power plant. Things like acid rain sources and CO2 emissions are just coming from different exhaust stacks.
Whats the point unless you make them cheap enough for people to trade in the gas hogs???????
