2012 Porsche Boxster

Although the 2012 Geneva Motor Show represents the European debut of the new 911 Cabriolet, it's Porsche's smaller roadster that's the real star here. Say hello to the brand-new third-generation Boxster.

2012 Porsche Boxster

What is it? The new 2012 Porsche Boxster is not only lighter, more powerful and up to 15 percent more economical than the car it replaces, it also promises to be even better to drive. Looks sharper, too.

What's hot? The entry-level version gets a new 2.7-liter 265-horsepower flat-six engine, based on the 3.4-liter 315-horsepower unit fitted to the Boxster S. Both see an increase in power compared with their predecessors, while direct injection, thermal management and stop-start technology all improve the efficiency. The new body work weighs less, and passenger space is increased.

What's not? The electrically operated soft-top is no longer hidden away by a decklid when folded, but the loss has hardly compromised the Boxster's overall appearance, and doubtless this change represents a significant weight saving.

How much and when? The base-model Boxster is priced from $59,000 and the more powerful Boxster S starts at $71,400, but that near $12,500 premium does buy you an extra 50 horses and bragging rights among friends. Both go on sale at the end of April.

Anything else I need to know? The 265-horsepower Boxster is 10 ponies more powerful than the car it replaces, does zero to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds and returns 36.7 mpg, while the 315-horse Boxster S makes a 5 horsepower gain, does zero to 62 mph in five seconds and returns 35.6 mpg. All figures with the optional 7-speed PDK gearbox; a 6-speed manual is standard.
