These vehicles might seem "affordable" up front but a wise shopper realizes that the  sticker price is only one of a handful of things that make a vehicle truly affordable. Best to do your homework and check that vehicle's reliability rating, depreciation rate, cost to insure etc.
A perfect example would be a recent article that showed how a Ford Explorer may cost you five grand less to purchase than a 4Runner but it actually cost you several thousand more to own over a five year period due to a faster depreciation rate and a  lower reliability rating, which equals more money spent on repairs. Bottom line.....do your due diligence before making a purchase, don't think you are saving money just because the upfront price is less.

Ways to save on car purchase.  Do your research first, make sure the car you buy is one that fits your needs.  It's a big waste of money to buy a car then a month later realize that your family won't fit in it for thanksgiving weekend at Grandma's.

Watch prices.  When a car gets to be 60 to 90 days old on the lot, the dealer wants to sell it more than the car that has been there for one week.  Also, the manufacturers give dealers money to sell the slow moving inventory.  My last car purchase was a 2013 Mazda 6 Sport with automatic.  22K sticker price, paid 15,020 for a car that sat on the lot for 6 months just as the new 2014 Mazda 6's were arriving.

Go on the last day of the month.  Even for sales people that work for salary, they do get bonuses based on the number of cars sold per month.  The sales person may get a 500 dollar bonus for selling one car. Same with the sales manager, do you really think they care how much money they make on your deal when that bonus check comes when you sign on the dotted line?

Be willing to walk away.  With my wife's car purchase we went on the last day of the month at 9 am on a Saturday just as the dealership opened.  We picked out our car, got the trade in appraisal on the one she was driving and said that the numbers were not good enough and we left.  The sales manager called us 10 minutes after we left.  We went back and forth over the phone 3 times,  2,432 dollars later, we were back signing on the dotted line on a zero percent 5 year loan.  Saved about 42 dollars a month over the life of the loan just because we were willing to walk away.  Salesman said he had never seen anyone get such a great price on a new car.  It's interesting what happens on the last day of the month when the General Manager tells the Sales Manager that no one goes home without a new car today.

The Chevrolet Spark is NOT a 2-door hatchback. It is a 4-door hatchback.

I've always been disappointed with the Smart lineup.  Sure they're small and look efficient but they get beat out by cars that have more room and more ammenities.  36mpg from a 3-cylinder with 70hp?  The majority of the cars on the list beat it out with more room and better looks.

I would much rather have a nicer two-year-old car than a new stripped econobox.
