The Frankfurt Motor Show marks the start of Lexus getting serious. For years, it has been a "nearly" brand, trying but never managing to become a convincing premium alternative to Audi and BMW.
The 2012 GS is the first car from a rejuvenated Lexus. Will the Japanese company at long last realize the promise it made when launched two decades ago?

What is it? The Lexus alternative to BMW's 5-Series has been reinvented and made considerably more desirable. The hybrid GS 450h remains, but a diesel is on the way this time, too, just for European consumption.
What's hot? The new Lexus GS's styling is distinctive and attractive. We like the new "spindle" front grille and are impressed with the sheer amount of detail. Lexus has even invented a new paint to better show off the lines.
What's not? It's not quite an all-new car, so the jury's out on overall desirability until we drive it. Lexus says it has been transformed here, too. Fingers crossed — it needs to be, and CEO Akio Toyoda, who personally sanctioned it, expects nothing less.
How much and when? The new Lexus GS will go on sale next year, initially in gasoline and hybrid form; Euro-friendly diesels will follow.
MSN Autos' verdict: This stylish new Lexus is a good start to the brand's big 2012 revival.
