Lamborghini Aventador J

Surprisingly, the Aventador and Gallardo coupes were of little interest to anyone visiting the Lamborghini booth at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Instead, it was the amazing Aventador Jota that nearly caused a riot.

What we were expecting was an Aventador LP700-4 Roadster. What we've got is 10 times more exciting, an extreme vision of a sports car. It's the fastest roadster ever built, and only one will be built — the one at the show.

The Jota loses its windscreen as well as its roof to become the most "radical and extreme" open-topped car Lamborghini has ever built. Lighter than the Aventador coupe on which it's based but still packing the same 6.5-liter 700-horsepower V12 engine and four-wheel drive, performance should prove extraordinary.

Lamborghini Aventador J

What's hot? Lamborghini has really let loose on this thing. The Aventador J has a new nose, skinnier doors, a massive rear diffuser and a new rear wing — not to mention a stunning Carbonskin-clad interior that does without air conditioning and navigation electronics. We love the cross-braced engine cover, too.

What's not? Anyone who suggests you're going to get wet if the rain comes out is missing the point. It's true, but it's missing the point. There is another slight downer, however: There is only one Lamborghini Aventador J.

How much and when? We do mean only one; there are no prototypes and none are being kept back for the Lamborghini museum. It is road-legal, and it is going to a customer. In fact, it is already spoken for — sold to a collector for around $2.8 million dollars. Imagine that: owning the only one in the world.

Anything else I need to know? Even with extra strengthening to compensate for the roof loss, the Lamborghini Aventador Jota is lighter than the coupe, so it should be faster than the standard car's zero to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds. Top speed is 186 mph-plus.
