Unfortunately the info in this clip about Alan Kulwicki and the car he drove to the 1992 Winston Cup Championship is INCORRECT! The car in fact was a 1992 Ford Thunderbird (not a Taurus as your article suggests). The Taurus did not become a a certified NASCAR race car until 1998 (its debut season) in which it won 15 races that year. Being that Alan was such an underdog in his hopes of capturing the Winston Cup Championship that year, considering his closest competition was Bill Elliott, driving for Junior Johnson Motorsports & Davey Allison, driving for Robert Yates Racing, he had nicknamed his car "The Underbird" (minus the "TH" for Thunderbird). Alan won the championship that year by 5 points over Bill Elliott which he achieved by leading ONE MORE LAP than Bill Elliott in the Atlanta 500 (thus he lead the most laps of the race and received the 5 bonus points that go to the driver leading the most laps in a race) It was the closest points race to the championship until last year when Carl Edwards & Tony Stewart tied in points for the championship but Tony won the championship due to the tie breaker clause which give the advantage to the driver with the most wins for that season.

I am glad to see some positive comments on the Mazda. It was the second car I remember growing up, we bought one new in 1980. This same car was discussed somewhere else and there were many unkind comments--the color may be a bit intense (ours was yellow too, but seemed more of a canary vs. bile) and this one's an automatic (not a good choice for these cars) but it is important to remember that it is RWD and weighs less than 1700lbs with a SOHC inline 4. That's 400lbs lighter than a Miata! They are not to be underestimated and did quite well in SCCA autocross--I was very sad when we junked ours for a Chevy Sprint. If I had been just a few years older I would have demanded that we keep it and fixed it up--I am a better mechanic than my Dad and might still be driving it.

hahaha! I drove one of those little neon-yellow Mazda GLC's in my early twenties. It was my very first car!! It's too bad that the photo doesn't show off the yellow-plaid upholtstery better.
Worse yet, I dated someone that drove a Kharman Ghia that was the same color, but had been an accident that wrinkled the hood. It looked (and drove) like a yellow prune.

When I was a kid riding the school bus, we had a very cool bus driver who owned a Karman Ghia in which he had replaced the four cylinder VW engine with a turbo-charged Porshe six cylinder motor. That crazy orange Ghia would go almost 140 mph, but I'm not sure I would want to be in it at that speed.
