Not impressed, my first car a 56 Chevy ran 225000 miles (with much abuse), have ran virtually every car I've ever owned over 200,000 miles. Ran a 78 Malibu 320000 miles and then sold it to a young kid who drove it 3 more years. Currently have 210000 miles on my 2002 Avalanche with which I've towed up to 6800 lbs virtually every weekend. Towed my travel trailer out west with my Avalanche in 109 degree weather last summer. at 198000 miles. Secret: don't use additives, use good quality lubes and parts.

Durability isn't a strong suit for a VW Passat?  Then why is it on the list?

From my experience, the Passat does belong on the list.  I agree with your comment about the Passat being understated and timeless from a styling standpoint, but your comment on not being durable is inaccurate.  My 1999 Passat 1.8T  is still motoring along just fine with 240,000 miles and counting with no major repairs whatsoever,  just normal maintenance.

This is my 3rd VW, and all have performed well and given excellent service.

My 1988 Honda Accord had 255,000 miles when I sold it...Paid $8,000. for it new,

sold it for $1500..Was a good car for the money, changed the oil and filter every 5,000

miles...Most cars will make 200.,000 if you take care of them...

You guys are smoking crack!  I get the fact that full size American pick ups, Volvos, Toyotas, Hondas & Subarus are well known to last over 200,000 miles but to have the Mustang on the list and not one BMW or Mercedes is ridiculous. There are many many Benz's & Beamers out there well over 200K and some past 300K. A friend of mine had a Benz he purchased new and over the course of 12 years he put 430,000 miles on the original engine & transmission before finally parting with it. I had a 740iL that I put 254K miles on, it started on the 1st crank, no leaks, no mysterious oil consumption, no mysterious clanks and everything on it still worked. A Mustang with 200,000 miles on it would be falling apart 50,000 miles ago. Better yet, drive a Mustang with 200K on it then drive a BMW or Mercedes with the same mileage and see which car is in better condition.

I drive a 2001 Toyota Tundra.  4300 miles to go to hit 300,000.  Still runs like it did new, performance, mileage, ride, etc.  No squeeks or rattles. Been over lots of rough terrain too.  Other than routine maintenance, only a couple of modest repairs.  Nough said........

Americans can not make cars. It is very rare for an American made car that to go 200,000 miles. Now don't get me wrong we can make some nice cars, but one that will go 200,000 miles without a major engine overhaul or transmission replacement is very unusual. Manufacturers make more money on replacement parts than on the automobile.
