Mercedes-Benz Gives Keys to 2013 SLK 250 on Facebook
Grand prize of the 'Best Summer' photo contest is a 13-month lease on the roadster.
It’s not surprising that mainstream automakers are increasingly turning to social media to promote their products. Kia revealed its upcoming flagship sedan on Facebook earlier this year, while sister brand Hyundai tweeted the price of 2013 Elantra GT.
But what is unexpected is that luxury brands, which have always used exclusivity as part of their appeal, have jumped on the Facebook bandwagon in a big way as well. Last year BMW unveiled the new BMW 3 Series on Facebook and Porsche celebrated reaching 2 million fans on Facebook by adding a car to the company's museum in Stuttgart that featured each "friend's" profile picture digitally added to the car's surface.
The latest example of a luxury brand looking to get "Likes" is the “Best Summer” Facebook campaign from Mercedes-Benz, which gives ordinary people the chance to win a 13-month lease on the 2013 SLK 250 roadster. First you have to “Like” Mercedes-Benz’s Facebook page, then upload a photo of your “Best Summer” moment along with a clever Mercedes-Benz reference.
The contest runs until Sept. 10 and you can enter once daily. You have to be 21 and have a valid driver's license to enter. The grand prize is worth $17,991, and the automaker is paying the winner an additional $7,500 to cover taxes and insurance on the car. Fifty first-prize winners in the contest will get a pair of SLK sunglasses with a retail value of $130.
“The summer season is full of great memories that everyone wants to capture and celebrate,” said Eric Jillard, manager of digital marketing for Mercedes-Benz USA, in a press release. “Through the 'Best Summer' campaign, we have created a fun way to bring this to life for Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts.”
Throughout the rest of the summer, Mercedes-Benz is hosting major events to provide “the perfect backdrop to capture the 'Best Summer' photos,” including the 94th PGA Championship at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, S.C., Aug. 9-12; the Pebble Beach Concours in California Aug. 16-19; and the U.S. Open tennis tournament Aug. 23-Sept. 9 in New York.
And while the Facebook contest is open to anyone, good luck getting into any of those exclusive events.
