2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Dyno Video Shows 609 HP at the Wheels

By David Arnouts

Ford seems to be playing a fun little game car enthusiasts like to see: under-rating.

Exhibit A is this video from 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords via Hooniverse, which shows the all-new 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 taking pulls on a dyno.

The result is an earth-shaking 609 rear-wheel horsepower. With the standard 15 percent powertrain loss factored in, that puts the GT500 in the neighborhood of 700 hp at the crank.

Bear in mind, the dynamometer was Ford equipment, and other manufacturers have been known to supply warmed-over cars for press events. But even if the wick is turned up on the GT500, one thing is for sure. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has some ground to make up, and we look forward to the revival of the muscle-car wars, circa 2013.

To heck with the Camaro ZL 1, those are impressive numbers that should scare a number of manufacturers. Wow.

Love this car! I personally like the looks of the latest Mustang. Far better looking than the Camaro with its too retro bunker box styling. And who can argue with 609 rwhp? I would happily trade in my f-150, my wifes Fusion and my wife for this car.

Impressive number...

I'd have like to have actually seen the curve/chart instead of just a number...

Also, nothing about what correction factors they used for the run...  "Happy dyno" anyone?

Still a beast of a car for $55k or so.  Also will depend on dealer markup as this will probably be a heavily demanded car.

Can't agree more, I was disappointed when the video ended and no graph. To plays devils advocate, they could have put any number up there and it leaves the subject open to skepticism from naysayers. That video didn't prove anything except that it sounds nice "on the gas".

This is no big deal.  Do it without a supercharger.

@ TheNonGoggleGuy  - I agree the current Mustang body style is UGLY.  I like the 2005-2009 body style (thus I own one).  Ford messed up all the good looking lines and gaveit that ugly back end, just my opinion, but I believe the sales fiquires are also reflecting the car does not look good(but the Camaro does).

Even with all that horsepower it will have the same o to 60 and 1/4 mile specs of the 580 horsepower ZL1 Camaro.  Ford performance is a joke.

Am I the only one who thinks this car is UGLY - in and out?  You can put horsepower in a large piece of fecal matter, but you can't charge $55K for it...

Bottom line: it's STILL a Ford, and it STILL comes with sync.  Useless, aaaaaaaaand.... useless.
