Recall: 278,222 Chrysler SUVs, pickups for failing axles
Move expands on an October 2012 recall; Ram, Dakota, Durango and Aspen models are affected.
Chrysler is recalling 278,222 pickup trucks and SUVs to fix rear axles that can suddenly lock up and could cause the driver to lose control, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall expands on an October recall of the 2009-2010 Dodge Ram 1500 and Dakota, in which pinion nuts could loosen and cause the axle to fail. At that time, Chrysler said it received 195 customer reports of rear axle failures due to loose nuts. The latest recall includes the 2011-2012 model years of the Ram 1500 and Dakota pickups, plus the 2009 Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen SUVs. In total, 322,522 vehicles are affected, including the previous recall.
Chrysler said it had received 381 additional reports of axle failure and 15 additional accident reports related to pinion-nut problems on 2009 and 2010 vehicles after the October recall. No injuries have been reported, Chrysler said.
Chrysler dealers will install pinion-nut retainers starting in March. Owners can contact the automaker at 1-800-247-9753.
