MINI Rocketman Concept Gets Patriotic for London Olympics
An illuminated moonroof, figurines and other weirdness arrive for the 2012 Summer Games.
Mini may never sell its Rocketman "3+1" hatch, but that hasn't stopped the automaker from dressing the cute little concept in British colors and placing a glowing Union Jack flag on its roof. Aside from the tricolor red-white-and-blue paint scheme and striped seatbelts, the 3-seat Rocketman has fiber-optic lighting, arranged in the outline of the British flag, on the cross braces of its all-glass roof. At night, the braces glow and shine accent lighting into the vehicle's interior.
Speaking of the interior, carbon fiber can be found everywhere here, and the names of major cities around the world are printed across the dashboard. In the back, several white figurines play basketball in an open cubby. (As Americans regularly dominate Olympic basketball, we're puzzled why Mini didn't choose soccer or rugby figurines to match the car's Brit pride. But that's probably too deep an analysis for a red, white and blue Mini concept.)
The doors, which open like dresser drawers with their integrated side rails and rear "jump seat," remain the same as the in concept that debuted at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show. Blue Alcantara covers the curvy, red-laced dash, while blue and white leather go on the seats and doors.
Look for the Rocketman to make the rounds when the games start in London on July 27.
