Recall: BMW 7-Series for suddenly opening doors
Power-closing doors may not latch completely on certain 2005-2007 models.

BMW is recalling 7,485 models of the previous-generation 7-Series sedan for doors that can open unexpectedly, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Only 2005-2007 models optioned with Comfort Access or Soft Close Automatic doors are included. Such powered doors use electric motors and cams at each latch that let passengers close the doors with very little force, allowing the cams to push the door into its final connection point. BMW said that a software problem may stop the cams before the door is fully shut, and despite appearing to be closed, a door could open suddenly due to an "irregular road surface" or a simple elbow.
In 2007, BMW issued a recall in Japan after receiving owner complaints of opening doors, but said that it "believed that the issue was not safety-related." Soon after the recall, BMW said it issued a service bulletin so that U.S. dealers would update the software, but only for customers who notified dealers about the problem. BMW said NHTSA did not request a formal recall. In August -- five years after the Japanese recall -- NHTSA contacted BMW after receiving nine owner complaints about opening doors, and earlier in October, the company decided to conduct a U.S. recall.
BMW dealers will update the control software starting in November. Affected owners can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
