NHTSA Expands Safety Probe for Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable
Ford vehicles face unintended-acceleration claims similar to Toyota's debacle.
A federal safety investigation, begun last week, into sticky accelerator pedals on 2001 through 2006 model-year Ford vehicles has widened, and may reach as many as 1.9 million vehicles according to The Associated Press.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 14 complaints of Ford Taurus sedans accelerating on their own, and as a result has investigated an estimated 360,000 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable vehicles from the aforementioned model years.
According to The AP:
A faulty cruise-control cable may be the cause of the problems. The cable can become detached and hold the throttle open, the agency said in documents posted on its website. In at least two of the complaints, drivers told NHTSA that their cars took off and ran red lights before they were able to bring them to a stop by shifting them into neutral or park.
So far, no recall has been issued. The complaints are limited to the Taurus, but as the Mercury Sable is a nearly identical vehicle, the probe covers both models.EXPLORE NEW CARS
