Survey: Men Are Much More Likely to Rely on GPS Than Women

Australian insurance company research shows 64 percent of men use navigation systems, while only half of women do.

TomTom USA. Photo by TomTomThe next time you hear a male driver boast about his gender's superior ability to arrive at a destination without getting lost, note that it may be because he and his XY brethren are getting more help in the form of GPS navigation systems.

Australian insurance company AAMI recently undertook a survey to find out more about the use of in-car navigation systems and was surprised to find that Australian men relied on GPS at a significantly higher rate than did women. Sixty-four percent of male drivers copping to nav use, compared with just 50 percent of women.

An AAMI representative called the results "surprising" and said the company "thought it would have been a little more even and maybe even slanted in favor of women."

The study also showed that younger drivers were more likely to rely on GPS devices to find their way.

So what does our American audience think? Is there something inherently different about our nation's nav-system use, or would a similar study conducted here look about the same?

I would attribute this to the fact that in my personal observations, men are slightly more "techy" and "gadgety" than women.  I wouldn't read anything more into it than that.

As a male with a penis we are absolutely worthless in today's society. We are inept and worthless....except when it comes to child support. We are not needed today and we all should be flushed down the toilet, since women are so superior. All men  are molesters or wife beaters and a waste of the air that we breathe. Sorry but just tired of ALL of the media hype of how we are worthless pieces of crap. Sorry gals.....just fed up with it!

What a crock of BS. Men like tech toys and gadgets. Women in general do not. I know where I'm going but still use the GPS to monitor my progress on waypoints, my overall ETA, and even checking the speed accuracy against my speedometer. Guy stuff. Gauge stuff. I also keep an atlas behind my seat and local maps to my destinations (and even my own city) in the event I ever need them for backup.

I cannot tell you how many women I know that can't find an alternate route, or know which way is north or south or east or west. I'm sure women know their way to a few places by memory: the hairstylist, the mall, the night clubs, and their boyfriend's place. My future fiancee couldn't successfully find my home at first after detailed map and landmark instructions with a Google map link printout AND her phone's GPS. So I throw the BS flag on this article!

That's because men can actually program them.  My fiance has as much luck at operating her GPS as she does folding a map; zero.  And even when I program it for her, she can't follow the directions when the nice voice says "Turn Left Now".  Instead she just drives aimlessly around, lost and sobbing, with the GPS repeating "Recalculating" over and over.

It would be hilarious if it weren't true.

Men tend to have jobs that require driving to a specific address within a certain time period.  For example a class 8 truck driver  might  have over 500 different destinations  over a 11 western state area.   It took years to to memorize all the different ways  to get to your destinations.  When GPS came, It took off  literal  hours off travel times. There are 3 million truck drivers class 8 and probably 10 percent are women.   If you are asked everyday how to get from unknown pickup address to unknown delivery address   GPS saves your butt.

Well of course men use GPS more than women.  Men understand the use of machines...

My husband tells everyone I 'm his pre-tech GPS.  Some people have no sense of direction, while others do.  I grew up in the middle of no where. I had to learn to develop it. My husband grew up in a city - signs and sidewalks. This just shows, stereotypes are very mutable.
