The Top 6 Car Ads Ever on YouTube

Adweek dug through the archives and came up with the 20 most popular ads of all time; six of them feature cars.

It should come as no surprise that many of the very best television advertising campaigns have come out of the auto industry, given the amount of money that manufacturers spend crafting their images. So when Adweek recently compiled a list of the 20 most popular ads of all time, as gauged by YouTube views, six of them were car-related. From Eminem shilling for Chrysler to a mini Darth Vader using the Force on a Volkswagen Passat, here are the most popular car ads of the Internet age.

Number 19: Chrysler's "Born of Fire" Super Bowl commercial featuring Eminem, 2011, 15 million views. Eminem drives a Chrysler 200 through the streets of Detroit, celebrating the resurgence of the Motor City.
Number 18: Honda's "Matthew's Day Off" Super Bowl commercial, 2012, 16 million views. The Matthew here is Matthew Broderick, reprising his most memorable role as Ferris Bueller. This time, he plays hooky in the streets of Los Angeles behind the wheel of a CR-V.
Number 16: Kia's "Dancing Hamsters" commercial, 2011, 18 million views. In which the rodents get down to LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem."
Number 15: Acura's "Transactions" Super Bowl commercial featuring Jerry Seinfeld (and an appearance by Jay Leno), 2012, 18 million views. Seinfeld ziplines through Manhattan, Leno swoops in wearing a flying-squirrel suit. Both are vying for keys to the very first of the new breed of Acura NSX.
Number 11: DC Shoes' "Gymkhana Five" commercial featuring Ken Block, July 2012, 24 million views. Not an auto manufacturer spot, but this installment of the insanely popular series shows rally driver/Internet sensation Ken Block tearing up the streets of San Francisco in a Ford Fiesta. In just a month, this video snagged 24 million views.
Number 3: Volkswagen's "The Force" Super Bowl commercial, 2011, 54 million views. After several false starts, our mini Darth Vader uses the Force to start a Volkswagen Passat.
Adweek deems this "the most successful Super Bowl ad in Internet history."

I hate those $&@&ing hamsters.  Ooooh look, the speakers flash with the music!  Face it, it's just another humdrum compact CUV.  Nothing wrong with it, nothing special either.

The Acura NSX commerical was silly and stupid, but it made me smile a little and I did take notice.  I also like how it played up to the fact that those two are probably amongst the biggest gearheads in Hollywood.  Though I know that in reality Seinfeld would not be lining up to be the first buyer of an NSX, but he WOULD probably fight Leno to the death over first dibs on the Porsche 918.  You can count the number of US owners of Porsche 959's on your fingers, Seinfeld is one of them.  He even lobbied Congress with Paul Allen and Bill Gates to get the "show and display" law passed so they can bring them in.  Must be nice to have that much money.

Gymkhana 5 was probably the coolest thing filmed in San Francisco since that city's streets were graced with the likes of Steve McQueen, a Highlander Green Mustang fastback, and a black Dodge Charger.
