Dr. McDreamy Fans, Start Your Engines
Patrick Dempsey is part of a duo racing in the Maserati MC Trofeo World Series.
Call it the McDreamy Team of auto racing. Just don't call it another Hollywood star slumming at the racetrack. In announcing that the Maserati Trofeo World Series will make its North American debut at California’s Infineon Raceway on the weekend of Sept. 21 with the World Touring Car Championship, the Italian automaker also revealed that a fast and famous duo will be behind the wheel.
Actor and avid racer Patrick Dempsey, better known as Dr. McDreamy from the hit TV Show “Grey’s Anatomy” will team with top movie stuntman, motorcycle racer and Hot Wheels X Games Double Loop Dare world record holder Greg Tracy to compete in the Maserati MC Trofeo World Series. The two Hollywood and hot-lap veterans will drive a Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo series livery provided by title sponsor and high-end British audio supplier Bowers & Wilkins.
Since the duo will surely bring to the track more than just hard-core racing fans, Maserati North America is also choosing the weekend to fete the first deliveries of the new 2013 Maserati GranTurismo Sport (shown above) and Sport Convertible. Maserati says the cars’ 454-horsepower V8 engine’s placement, behind the front axle in a front-mid arrangement, “comes directly from the racetrack” and results in a precisely balanced vehicle. The production car also features a reshaped fascia for better cooling airflow and aerodynamics, the automaker says, while new, contoured Italian leather seats comfortably snuggle four adults.
But the GranTurismo MC Trofeo race car will be carrying only Dempsey and Tracy -- to victory, they hope, since Dempsey is no weekend warrior.
The accomplished driver and team owner has raced some of the world’s most celebrated and demanding circuits. And he has a pedal-to-the-metal partner in Tracy, a six-time winner of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in the motorcycle category and an A-list stuntman who has appeared in such hit movies as "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Fast and Furious" and "The Avengers."
Maserati says that the all-inclusive format of the GranTurismo MC Series “suits gentleman drivers” and that all the cars in the series are strictly derived from production Maseratis to ensure a level playing field. New features for the car that Team McDreamy will be driving for the 2012 season include an aerodynamic body-kit and reduced weight. The grid includes 24 cars and competitors from more than a dozen countries, and the final round of the series will be at the F1 circuit in Shanghai. Where, no doubt, they also watch reruns of “Grey’s Anatomy.”
