Hyundai ‘Zombie Survival Machine’ Is Ready to Ride Among the Undead
Automaker teams with the creator of "The Walking Dead" for a one-off vehicle and promotion.
When the zombie apocalypse comes, Hyundai has you covered with the Elantra coupe Zombie Survival Machine. It features a spiked zombie plow on the front, wheels fitted with truncheons, slatted armored windows, a roof hatch for shooting at “walkers,” an electric rear trunk to stash weapons and more.
Don’t expect to see it on dealers’ lots any time soon, though. Where you can see it is at Comic-Con International in San Diego from July 12-15. You can also -- maybe -- win a real "Walking Dead"-themed Elantra.
To celebrate the 100th issue of the comic, Hyundai teamed with Robert Kirkman, creator of the blockbuster "The Walking Dead" graphic-novel series and his Skybound imprint to launch the Hyundai Undead program. The campaign kicked off June 12 with the launch of HyundaiUndead.com and a four-part behind-the-scenes video series detailing the creation of the Zombie Survival Machine and showcasing the car’s build from start to finish by Design Craft Fabrication.
As part of the Hyundai Undead program, the Elantra Coupe Zombie Survival Machine will be unveiled at the convention in the booth of Future US, publisher of the "The Walking Dead." Comic-Con attendees will have the chance to take pictures with the car and check out a limited-run illustrated owner’s manual that walks drivers through the Zombie Survival Machine’s features. The booth will also host a zombie target-practice area and a zombie costume contest.
While no one will get to drive the one-off car created by Kirkland -- unless, we suppose, the zombie apocalypse breaks out during Comic-Con -- Hyundai will be giving away an Elantra GT wrapped in the cover of "The Walking Dead" 100th issue, created by artist Charlie Adlard, at Comic-Con. But you don’t have to attend the convention to win: Anyone can enter the sweepstakes at HyundaiUndead.com.
