Scion FR-S to Get a Convertible Version; Other Models May Be in the Works

Soft-top is expected late next year or early 2014.

The Scion FR-S. Photo by Scion.Good news, convertible fans: Car and Driver is reporting that the awesome new Scion FR-S will get a soft-top version, expected to arrive in late 2013 or early 2014.

A convertible version of the FR-S is a good way to add sales volume for the enthusiast-oriented model, and therefore help justify the all-new platform. Speaking of which, C&D also reports that a larger 4-door sedan and coupe based on the current chassis may be in the works.

The convertible FR-S is expected to keep the rear seats -- sorry, no roadster, at least not yet -- as well as the current 2.0-liter 200-horsepower boxer four engine with a choice of six cogs in either manual or automatic configurations. (The as-yet-still-hypothetical larger sedan and coupe would likely get a larger powerplant, according to the report.)

Other than the fact that no FR-S will get a factory-installed turbocharger, those are all the details Car and Driver is reporting for now. Well, except for pricing: The magazine says to expect the drop-top version of the FR-S to "top the coupe’s $24,930 base price by a few grand."

I'm liking this thing more and more.  Affordable, small, nimble, and clean-looking; its like a reincarnation of the original 240Z.  I think I'm falling in love...but I'd prefer the coupe over the ragtop.

Will these be rear seats, or will they be rear seats like the Lexus SC430 had "rear seats".  Find a picture of one, you will understand.

Speaking of which, C&D also reports that a larger four-door sedan and coupe based off the current chassis may be in the works.

Possible revival of the Lexus SC/Toyota Soarer?
