Mitsubishi Previews i-MiEV Evolution Pikes Peak Car

Though Mitsubishi officially calls this Pikes Peak International Hillclimb car the i-MiEV Evolution, we've taken to referring to this electro-monster the Zebulon Evo. Destined to be piloted in the Race to the Clouds by team manager Hiroshi Masuoka, the racer differs from the stock Mitsubishi i in rather significant ways.

Rather than the road car's single 49kW motor, the Zebulon Evo features three 80kW motors — two driving the rear wheels while one spins the fronts — and a 35kWh battery pack to keep the juice flowing on the way up the mountain. For reference, the stock car makes do with a 16kWh pack.

The ZEvo sacrifices the i's unibody structure for a tube chassis wrapped in carbon-fiber panels; the end result is a bit like an IMSA GTP car as imagined by Little Tikes.

The other factory-supported i on the mountain will be Beccy Gordon's machine, which will apparently be much closer to models available in Mitsubishi showrooms. Win on the mountain, sell on...? Eh, none of the rhymes work. We'll just stop now.
