Ducati Panigale versus Porsche 911 GT2 RS: The Drag Race

'Chris Harris on Cars' looks at one beastly car, one bonkers bike and a drag strip and says, 'Why not?'

By Joshua Condon Jul 27, 2012 9:17AM

I'm heading to Laguna Seca to watch some MotoGP insanity during the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix this weekend, and in honor of my host, Ducati, here's "Chris Harris on Cars" setting up quite an interesting drag race: the fire-breathing Ducati 1199 Panigale against a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. This isn't just different weight classes competing, it's different species of speed, though both now under the Volkswagen umbrella. And I mean that in the best possible way.

The winner is -- well, the winner is who you'd expect the winner to be, though the race was hardly a one-and-done, as both the 620-horsepower Porsche and the 192-horsepower Ducati had massive trouble putting all that power directly to pavement off the line. The race is good, and the conversation between Harris and Panigale rider Ben Cope, of visordown.com, is equally entertaining.

It's funny how they always pick great super cars but horrible superbikes to do these with. Ducati's are great bikes, but they aren't drag racing material. Love to see this guy go up against an 2012 ZX-14.

Interesting video.  Hard to believe that the guy hadn't ridden a bike before...  Looking forward to the next parts.

You should do a 1/2 and full mile the Porsche will earn back some of what it lost in the 1/4. Either way a Superbike is gonna beat anything running on regular gas and then of course a racing gas or a jet pack car against a straight gas bike is not fair either. Of course a Superbike is made for instant insane speed where a car like a Porsche can be impressive it will never match it. Maybe if you took some more weight of the frame but then it is going to break loose even easier.
