Mercedes-Benz is recalling 5,800 cars from 2011 and 2012 for potential fuel leaks, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The fuel filter flange, a connection joint between the fuel tank and the outside filter, may have been improperly molded so that certain areas are thin and weak. This can cause the flange to crack from the fuel line's high pressure and temperature and leak gasoline onto a hot component, such as an exhaust pipe.

Only specific trims from the 2011 and 2012 model years are affected, including rear-wheel-drive and 4Matic versions of the GLK350, C300, CL550, CL63 AMG, E350 sedan and coupe, S400 hybrid, S550 and S63 AMG. No fires or injuries have been reported, the company said.

Dealers will begin the recall in January and replace the fuel filters. Owners can call Mercedes-Benz at 1-800-367-6372.

Other automakers have had similar recalls this year. In November, Jaguar recalled 4,195 XF sedans from the 2010-2012 model years for fuel tank flanges that could crack and leak fuel. In June, Ford recalled 11,500 Escapes for cracked fuel lines and recalled 5,499 Edge crossovers in September for other fuel-line leaks.

We had a 2006 Mercedes E350.  We drove across country not realizing this had happened to the car.  The entire underside of the backseat was soaked in gasoline.  We were just VERY VERY lucky we didn't catch fire.  We even had a blow out...God was with us in there was no sparks! I firmly believe this is the reason I have Asthma now.  Didn't have any breathing issues prior to this!! Mercedes fixed the leak and replaced the seat underside, but the car smelled like gasoline for months.  I kept a bag of charcoal in the trunk to help absorb the awful smell.  Never trusted the car after that!

What about the 2007 E350 4MATIC? You cannot fill the tank without smelling the gas leaking from the top of the tank! Also turns on the check engine light! LOOK A LITTLE DEEPER NHTSA!!!!!!!!!! $55,000.00 CAR AND EXPENSIVE AND DANGEROUS PROBLEMS THAT MERCEDES WILL NOT PAY FOR!!!

I still own a 2006 E500. I started experienced STRONG fuel smell when tank filled up around 2008/2009. I took it several times to MB Dealer for scheduled maintenence and other minor repairs. I would always bring it up with them, twice while still under warranty. they said they couldnt find anything wrong and claimed thats the natural breather from the gas tank. Huh? I knew something was still wrong. Smelt like you were going to do an insurance job, pour 5-10 gallons of gas to torch a place down. had them check it 2 more times, of course after the warranty expired. they must have checked it better because they found a leaking gasket by/on tank  that would cost me $800-900 to repair. I still own car, have not repaired it, and work around by filling up only 3/4 to top, only fill up if im going to drive LONG distances within 24 hours. Disgusting Product from MB. Ive owned a 1998 560, 2002 ML430, lease 2002 S500, lease 2005 S500, and currently also drive a 2008 S550. Driven leased BMW's- 2007 530, 2010 535, on order 2013 535.  MB are generally great luxury cars but for BEST/better value, BMW is a great alternative.
They'll change evrything except tiresB

Wow,  I suppose they will have to ship all thise cars back to Germany to be fixed,  I would not trust a MB shade tree mechanic to monkey with it here.

Oh well,  I always believe Sam Snead was and always will be the best and greatest golfer ever,  and Ben Hogan was second.  And all the other clowns are way down the line.

Glad you agree.
