Recall: 3,235 Toyotas for airbag sensors

Sensors on models sold in 5 Southeastern states may not have been calibrated properly.

A Toyota distributor is recalling 3,235 cars in select states for airbag sensors that may malfunction, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Southeast Toyota Distributors of Deerfield Beach, Fla., one of several regional distributors that import and prep Toyotas, may not have calibrated the airbag weight sensors in the front passenger seats of certain 2009-2013 Toyota models. Only models sold in Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia are affected, and only those equipped with seat covers, seat heaters or headrest-mounted LCD screens. No Lexus or Scion models are affected.

In an accident, the passenger-side airbag may deploy improperly. The weight sensors determine whether to deploy the airbag if it detects the seat is empty or if a small child is sitting up front. Toyota itself is not issuing the recall; the distributor is responsible for installing factory accessories, such as rear DVD entertainment systems, on these vehicles. The distributor said the problem was limited to two employees who were not using the required calibration tools.

The vehicles are as follows:

  • 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius and RAV4
  • 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser and Highlander Hybrid
  • 2010-2013 Corolla, Sienna and Tundra
  • 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza
  • 2012 Prius V
  • 2010-2012 Sequoia

Dealers will inspect and recalibrate the airbag sensor beginning this month. Southeast Toyota Distributors can be reached at 1-954-429-2000, or Toyota can be reached at 1-800-331-4331.

According to the article, this is a localized situation. It's only in the south eastern states.

That means that the manufacturing plants didn't miss it. The accessory installers did who work for this group. Just a little clarity for those who can't see quite so well.

This is groundbreaking news? 3,235 cars?? How about the 2012 Ford Focus that have had 3 different recalls so far? Nobody talks about the current recalls on Chrysler/Dodge minivans, nobody talks about the 2013 Ford Escape recall. But if its a Toyota, Honda, Nissan its front page news? Every car has a recall or some issue, And here we go AGAIN with all the bashing.

Also did some of you know that some Chevy Aveos are actually made in Korea? (K - Vin #) and the Fiestas are made in Mexico?? Hows that for American??? Your "American" companies don't even want to pay AMERICANS to do the job. In my eyes an american car is one thats built here, not one thats built somewhere else and imported with the logo of an american corporation.

U'd think by now the cars would tell the installer, " U did it wrong, D>A>."

If Croc actually knew anything about Toyota, he'd know that it's the Camry, Sienna, Tundra, Sequoia and Venza that are made in the USA. Or maybe those plants don't exist and it's all just media hype. OMG, they have been making it all up??? WTF!!
The "Jap Junk" that Toyota makes has more vehicles on the IIHS's list of top safety pic than any other manufacturer in the world.
JD Powers has awarded the Tundra "most dependable truck" seven years in a row. Toyota tops the list for relaibilty year after year after year so yea, if being the most reliable automaker, with the most dependable vehicles and top safety pics means that you are driving "junk", then, yup, I'm driving junk, and that "junk" has allowed me to not spend one single dime on towing or repairs for many years now. I can't say that about any Ford or GM that I have owned and I have owned twice as many of them as I have Japanese vehicles.
You guys could be much happier if you just get over your bitterness when it comes to the Japanese. The facts are, that if it has a motor in it, the Japanese make it better than the US does. That applies to cars, motorcycles, ATV's, boats, personal watercraft, power tools, lawn mowers, snow blowers. Anyone that knows anything about motors knows this to be the truth, it's a fact that you may not like, but it still is a fact.
Now, lash out at me all you want but it won't change the truth or hurt my feelings, but  it will just make you even angrier than you already are and drive you deeper into denial.

King of reliability

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Toyota Motor Corporation has AGREED to pay $17.35 million, the maximum fine allowable under the law, in response to the automaker failing to report SAFETY defects to the federal government in a timely manner. This action represents the single highest civil penalty amount ever paid to NHTSA for violations stemming from recalls, not including the 3.1 MILLION in other fines Toyota is going to pay......and the hits just keep on coming

keep bashing toyota, but they do have the longest lasting cars on the road, american cars simply dont compare when it comes to durability, yea toyotas arent flashy but thats there whole point! there directing there attention to people who simply want to get from A to B not look the "coolest" or go the fastest, you say go figure when it comes to there awards but go figure there actually winning for a reason

Why all the sour grapes Toyota fans and friends??? You see we find it ironic that you all defend your love affair with Toyota with politically driven comments, child like talk of (yea but what about GM,

Ford etc.), true American car companys or, how good Toyota`s are on the very same site that  is reporting yet ANOTHER TOYOTA RECALL

Typical Japanese Garbage.  Its funny people talked about the poor quality of American cars in the 1980s and how they were recalled a lot, but Toyota and Honda have put the 1980s to shame in the last 5 years and yet people still buy that crap.  It makes no sense how hypocritical Americans are.

frosty ....does it A: give you a warm fuzzy feeling constantly making up excuses for Toyota`s overall poor performance or B: become incredibly frustrating for you and your friends to day after day after day, see Toyota trumping one massive recall, failure and fines with another
