Video: Bugatti Veyron 'Top Speed' Run Goes Viral

Driver hits 225 mph in Arizona en route to Mexican border; officials are not amused.

Two years ago, a driver with four years of track experience behind the wheel of a Bugatti Veyron -- including five runs where he hit 250-plus mph -- took to the roads of Arizona to push the limits of the $1.5 million Veyron in regular driving conditions. The result was seven runs at between 215 and 225 mph en route to the Mexican border. He kept the car in "handling" rather than top-speed mode, to better negotiate uneven road surfaces. Last week, a YouTube video of the high-speed driving spree went viral; 1.2 million viewers have watched the Veyron blasting through the desert in the seven days since it was posted.

To capture the Veyron's extreme speed, cameras were placed on the side of the road in multiple locations. In some of the footage, the speed of the car shakes the camera from its spot. Two cameramen also shot video from inside the cockpit of the car -- the driver and a cameraman riding shotgun can be seen bouncing lightly as the car rockets past desert scenery.

According to whoever posted the video, the only contact the driver had with law enforcement was when a police officer stopped the car to gawk at it. At that point, it was going an almost-legal 80 mph, which wouldn't have prompted any ticket-writing. But Arizona cops have caught wind of the stunt and apparently they aren't pleased. Bart Graves, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman, told Reuters that the driver would be thrown in jail if he was caught repeating his antics. "The fact is, this is a criminal act," Graves said.

Remarkably quiet when it goes by the camera.  You hear more wind and road/tire noise when it flies by....
