Zipcar to Add more Honda Vehicles to Fleet

Honda on Wednesday said that it will expand the number of its models available through the Zipcar car-sharing service.

The agreement between the companies will add more Honda Insight hybrids to the Zipcar fleet, as well as more CR-V compact SUVs. The Fit EV will arrive in the fleet this fall, and Accord plug-in sedans will come in early 2013, according to the company.

The Zipcar service has more than 670,000 members and 8,900 vehicles in urban areas in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Spain.

"The future of mobility is being shaped by economic forces, evolving technology and global trends, from increased urbanization to concerns about climate change, to how the newest generation of drivers thinks about transportation," said Scott Griffith, chairman of Zipcar. "This win-win partnership with Honda adds to Zipcar's array of smart and sustainable transportation options."

Honda benefits by having Zipcar drivers experience its technology and hopefully think about the brand when it comes time to purchase a car.

To sign up for the service, potential customers can go to www.zipcar.com, add a user name and password and start renting. Customers have the choice between two plans, one for occasional drivers and one for drivers who know how often they'll need a car. Both cost far less than a car payment, gasoline, insurance and the maintenance of owning a car.

I am not sure this is entirely about dumping cars in fleet sales.  Zipcar is heavily used by college students.  My alma mater just got Zipcars in the dorm parking lots.  I think this is about getting college students into Hondas early.

Honda has to do something to get rid of the cars they can't sell.  Putting in the Zipcar fleet is better than having them around collecting dust.

Now that they've given the new Civic a rental car/taxi cab interior, fleet sales are a natural.

Honda is losing ground with retail sales so they have to beef up their fleet sales to compensate.
