Tech Feature Friday: Cadillac XTS Configurable Instrument-Panel Display
Part of the Cue system, the panel features four screens with user-selectable elements.
Cadillac isn’t the first manufacturer to offer an instrument panel made up of an LCD screen instead of analog gauges; Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar also have the feature. And it’s not the first to provide an LCD instrument panel that has configurable side sections; the MyFord Touch system offers similar capability.
But it’s safe to say that Cadillac sets a precedent with the LCD instrument panel that’s part of the Cue system on the 2013 XTS. Although it's not fully configurable, the driver gets a choice of four different screens, including Simple (for Caddy’s traditional country-club codger) and a video-gamelike Enhanced mode designed to appeal to the younger demographic that the brand is hoping to attract.
Within each screen are semi-configurable functions, and, like MyFord Touch, Cue also allows selection of information such as battery voltage or tire pressure to side sections that a driver prefers to view most. While it takes some getting used to, the panel moves closer to the smartphone experience that Cue is trying to replicate by allowing users to set up a screen with icons and features they use most.
