Porsche Launches 911-Inspired Bicycles

Two new city bikes are intended to channel the 911's legendary lines.

Porsche Bike RS Photo by Porsche North America.As cities across the country become increasingly bike-friendly by building new bike lanes and installing bike centers where cyclists can rent, repair and store their equipment, it's no wonder car manufacturers have decided to get in on the growing trend. Porsche recently announced the addition of two city bicycles to its spring collection of accessories. The Racing Sport (RS) and Sport (S) commuter bikes are meant to channel the lines of the Porsche 911.

Intended for use as commuter bikes, both models use lightweight, high-end components such as Shimano gear systems and Magura hydraulic disc brakes; the RS is made from carbon fiber, and the S has an aluminum frame. The RS (pictured above) is the nimbler of the two bikes, while the S is a bit heavier and comes in Carrera white.

The idea behind the two designs was to impart the power, responsiveness and speed of the 911 onto the bikes. The curve of the bike's crossbar mimics the profile of the 911.

Porsche's endeavor doesn't mark the first time a carmaker has crossed over into the bicycle world. Last year. McLaren teamed up with Specialized to produce a road bike, and two years ago, BMW, Volkswagen, Peugeot and MINI all reportedly began dabbling in bicycle-making. 

The Porsche RS and S are available exclusively at Porsche dealerships; pricing has been reported as $4,775 for the Bike S and a whopping $8,538 for the Bike RS.
