GM Considers Flagship Sedan for Cadillac

Cadillac is considering a large, flagship sedan to take on the Mercedes-Benz S-class and BMW 7-series, a top General Motors official says.

Mark Reuss, GM's president for North America, told Automotive News last month that a new flagship is on the table as GM maps its go-global strategy for Cadillac.

A flagship would be a continuation of how GM has been positioning Cadillac's lineup to go head-to-head in each segment with BMW, Mercedes and Audi. This summer, for example, Cadillac is launching the ATS compact sedan, GM's answer to the BMW 3-series.

Next year, Cadillac is expected to roll out a redesigned CTS sedan that is longer than the current generation. That would make it an apples-to-apples choice when compared with another car in the mid-sized luxury segment, such as the Mercedes E-class.

"I'm a fan of going right at those segments and beating them in segment," Reuss says.

He says he would "love Cadillac to have a flagship." While GM is launching the XTS large sedan this month, it's priced far lower than the 7-series, S-class or Audi A8.

But a Cadillac flagship becomes a reality only if GM executives conclude that it is the best use of the automaker's finite resources, Reuss says.

"The way we're funding Cadillac has been from, sort of, everything else in GM," Reuss acknowledges. That leaves the brand with "very reduced scale in terms of individual architectures, engines, technology."

"We have to make very careful decisions," he says.

Some of those already have been made, including the redesigned CTS and Escalade SUV, both expected late next year. The ELR plug-in hybrid coupe also is due next year.

As a "highline" auto dealer, I handle all of the makes mentioned in this article.  The Cadillac is far and away the best value for the buck, and it doesn't kill you on upkeep.  As a "sporty" car, I drive a Benz CL63 AMG coupe, but when I want to take a trip longer than 2 hours, I take the Cadillac DTS sedan (comfort, luxury, safety, and 24 MPG at 70 MPH).  The XTS should be a success.  PS  I sell a lot of used Cadillacs every year, and the average age of the buyers I get is now under 30!

DZX, the CTS-V is the fastest american made sedan. It is not a sports sedan, either, it is a LUXURY sedan!  The new Cadillac is tru luxury and performance and technology and comfort. It's not a fast sedan.

As for the XTS, it is amazing! I sat in one next to the audi and mb and bmw, and the audi is the only one that came close to having the full package that the XTS has. and NONE have the warranty that the XTS has OR the maintanance costs that the XTS has. Oh , i forgot to mention the room, the comfort, the style, and as some of you wish to talk about , the price!

Go find you a flagship car for a luxury car company with more features than you can imagine having in a car with a better warranty......... get this........for less than $63000.00

Now, if you want tyo believe that American made cars will never be number 1, then get in your kia and go with your friends to watch the new Fast and the Furious movie. Cadillacs are not for you. There is a new standard for luxury and performance, and Cadillac has it figured out.

For years the Japanese auto makers have told us how great their cars are, tragically, too many Americans believe the COMMERCIALS.  It is my belief that if you have no expectations of a car when you buy it, you will not be disappointed when you own it, yes I am talking to Honda and Toyota buyers.  When someone buys a Cadillac, they feel they have achieved a point in their life to be proud of, and as a result they have expectations of their new car.  The German cars are fine machines and you get what you pay for.  And you will pay a lot.  Please do not compare a $75,000.00 dollar Cadillac to a $120,000.00 dollar S-Class Mercedes.  It is not fair to either car.  But do compare the $120,000.00 dollar Corvette ZR1 to the $200,000.00  Ferrari.  Yes the pride of Italy has nicer leather. but with the extra $80,000.00 dollars you can have Versace redue the interior for a nice Italian touch to the rocket from Bowling Green Kentucky.  I challenge the foreign car buyers to try an American car.  The 1980' and 1990's were not kind to the US auto industry.  But bang for the buck is turning to America these days.  If you don't care about what you drive to the train station, keep sending your money to Tokyo and those nice people that brought you Pearl Harbor.  Good luck to Cadillac.  Nobody ever grew up with a poster of an Accord on their bedroom wall dreaming  "someday I'll drive a Honda"!

I thought I was done with American cars as well.  Still have the last of four in row Japanese, turbocharged, all-wheel drive cars - all of them awesome.  It has now been joined in the garage by a new CTS-V sedan, a car that already competes exactly head to head with the best Germany has to offer in both quality and performance.  Cadillac is competing an new segment for them, but doing it very well.

As I grew up, I realized that my grandfather ALWAYS drove Cadillacs! They were comfortable, quiet and smooth...and I vowed to NEVER own one! Over the last decade Cadillac has totally changed my mind! The CTS, the CTS-V, hell, even the STS had my vote! The Escalade was the cincher to prove that Caddys could compete in every segment. They know how to hit the mark and stay true to their heritage. Will there ever be a short-wheelbase convertible ala Mini Cooper??? Only if they deem it a segment worth entering! But be warned...if they DO, they'll OWN IT!

The American auto industry is alive and well! Making the same or less mistakes as everyone else and competing on the global stage!

BTW - I've owned European vehicles almost exclusively...because they WERE better IMHO. That was then, this is NOW!

It seems to me that Caddy's biggest problem has been resale value, not the looks of the car or even the quality.

rudi1889, that was the old Cadillac. Cadillac had realized what their market group was and that is why they changed the design of their line up back in 2003. They wanted to offer a line up of different vehicles so thirty somethings could get into their cars. Cadillac has gotten better every year since. The fact that they are munufacturing cars on every plain, weather it be eco minded, white collar execs, or pure adrenneline enthusiasts is a testement to what they have been doing the past ten years. I do agree with Bill, at least in regards to Diamler, they have lost their way. They do not produce a quality product to justify their price. BMW on the other hand, is a real competitor. It will be interesting to see who comes on top. I have my money on Cadillac, just because they are able to offer just as nice an automobile for less price, or more features for teh same price range.

A friend of mine just bought a BMW 3-series and he said the gas mileage suck hog azz! It is a matter of time before Cadillac regain its rightful position at the top of the luxury segment. Have you ever heard the term "runs like a Cadillac", when referring to anything from refrigerators to microwaves. There is a reason behind this quote, but you young ones wouldn't understand it  even if it was taught in grade school!

I have owned and sold Cadillacs.  They are great cars.  Most of those who buy them tend to be older and never seemed to be that interested in technical features..    I don't believe the buyer cares about FWD or RWD.  That seems to be an enthusiasts thing and not much of a concern of older drivers.  I think Cadillac should build a flagship model keeping in mind who their market is.

I would still like a 67 GTO or a 69 Chevelle SS396. I think there better looking than any of the new stuff the auto makers are creating.
