Ward's Names Top 10 Car Interiors

From cheap to pricey, we have to agree these interiors are fine places to spend time.

By Clifford Atiyeh Apr 17, 2012 2:09PM
2012 Chrysler 300 Luxury (c) ChryslerEditors at trade magazine WardsAuto have picked the 10 best car interiors for 2012, a list that ranges from the Chevrolet Sonic subcompact to the three-row Infiniti JX35 SUV. Ward's, best known for awarding the "10 Best Engines" each year, surveyed the interiors of 40 new cars based on design, fit-and-finish, and comfort.

We can't vouch for all of these winners -- three of them aren't yet on sale -- but we can't disagree, either. Note one thing: fancy touch-sensitive dashboards like on the upcoming Cadillac XTS and Lincoln MKZ are not mentioned here.

Read on for the full list, and then compare our shorter list of new and used vehicles with similarly great interiors.

Audi A7

The A7's interior "manages to be every bit as dramatic and inviting as the sheet metal," Ward's said. When fitted with matte finish wood and live traffic maps from the pop-up LCD, it's superb.

Chevrolet Sonic

2013 Chevrolet SonicThe new Sonic is out to brush away the rancid flavors of the old Aveo. "In the old days, when you drove an inexpensive Chevrolet, you felt as if the entire car was giving you the finger," said Craig Fitzgerald of The Boston Globe. Not this one.

Chrysler 300 Luxury

This top-end 300 (pictured in the lead image, above left) features two-tone leathers and plenty of soft touch points. "If Bentley sold an affordable family sedan, it would look like the 300 Luxury," Ward's said.

Dodge Dart

2013 Dodge DartWard's sums up this new Dodge compact nicely: "All for $21,485, the Dart includes a heated steering wheel, aggressively bolstered front seats, Nappa leather, navigation, dual-zone climate control and a 7-in. (18-cm) display."

Hyundai Accent

"The Accent arrived with a $15,925 sticker, which we double-checked for a typo because this interior shows incredible attention to detail," Ward's said.

Hyundai Azera

2013 Hyundai AzeraThe Azera is Hyundai's Toyota Avalon. It's just a smidgen bigger than the Sonata and a little bit nicer on the inside. It's "proof there is no substitute for premium materials."

Infiniti JX35

Infiniti, with its glittery woods and wavy stitching, designs some very unique interiors these days. There is plenty of that in the new JX.

Mazda CX-5

The CX-5 is Mazda's smaller replacement for the CX-7, and editors at Ward's liked the "restrained, straightforward interior."

Range Rover Evoque

2012 Range Rover EvoqueInside or out, the Evoque has won more than 100 awards since it came out late last year. The standard glass roof and soft leathers don't shortchange the Range Rover feel, despite a price that's thousands less than the bigger Sport.

Volkswagen Beetle

Simple and cute. Oh, we're not supposed to use that word around the 2012 Beetle. Well, it's not manly, either, but it's one of the easiest -- and roomiest -- interiors around.

The reason the Range Rover has a nice interior is so that you have someplace nice to sit while waiting for the tow truck.

I see the HVAC controls at the bottom, but it appears that the radio is controlled entirely through the touchscreen.  For me, that is a no go.

I'm with you.  I don't like this trend in automobiles at all.  Just wait until these cars are 5 or more years old and the electronics fail.  I've heard some systems with navigation are as much as $5,000 to replace and it's hard to do without them when a lot of the vehicle's systems are co-dependent on them....including a simple radio.  I'm not even thrilled with any of the drive-by-wire technologies nor the move to electric power steering.  There are some things that just don't need to be automated and a simple analog/mechanic solution will do.

I've always been impressed with Audis for their ergonomic layouts and even in this roundup, I see that they've not only made the list but ranked pretty high. Competition is increasing though and I'd agree that the Chrysler 300 interior is marvelous. I also like the Cadillac CTS setup.

Sadly, I see the trend of touch-screen this and touch-screen that is growing more popular with manufacturers. Where's that tactile sense in placing your finger on a sheet of gorilla-glass? People can't drive while texting, wait'll we have to change the radio after going through three menu levels!

To keep conversation lite, I believe the interior of the Buick Enclave, without a doubt, is one of the best eye pleasers out there.  The beautiful wood tones with the soft blue lighting, is remarkably relaxing to enhance a more luxorious ride without spending thousands of dollars.  Plus the soft leather seats, cashmere, have a way to let your body sink in to a very comfortable state.  Then it's roomy, seats seven, and has large cargo room.  The Enclave is a true pleasure to drive while it seems to glide down the road not finding any pot holes to spill coffee, or takes turns that make you lean into the windows.  Keep a look out this year as it seems the Enclave is giving birth to a smaller version called the Encore.  It will be coming out in later 2013.  Please make it a point to test drive both vehicles and see and feel one of the most beautiful interiors going.

It's a dashboard. Car companies have been trying to make them part of the driving experience for decades. I want to know what it will look like at 200,000 miles and how many times will I have to replace the gadgets.

What about the Gremlin dashboard? where else could you have a shelf from left to right. If you needed something on the right side just make a right turn and it'll automatically come to you, now that's handy!
