Hyundai on the Rise

Hyundai-Kia grabs market share, outsells all European brands so far in 2011.

By Joshua Condon Aug 3, 2011 3:30PM
The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. (Photo courtesy of Hyundai.)Hyundai's new models have made quite the splash -- and you can be sure automakers in Europe have taken note. In the first seven months of 2011, Hyundai-Kia has outsold all European brands in the U.S. combined.

As Jalopnik says, "Let us be the first to welcome our new Korean overlords." Slick styling, clever marketing -- including the well-timed Hyundai Assurance Program -- and a weakened Japanese competition have helped the South Koreans grab an additional 1.38 percent market share, up to 9.14 percent -- right behind Honda.

Joe2789-I read all your posts and I get it now.  You don't have a problem with your Hyundai, you don't even own one! You have a problem "cause them there foreigners is takin all our jobs".  I know you're the type who doesn't want to be confused by the facts but, again, the Hyundai's are built in Montgomery, Alabama at a plant that employees over 3000 Americans. Keep buying your GM (Government Motors) product if it makes you feel patriotic, just ignore the fact that they are probably built in Mexico or Canada.  Just be sure to put that Obama bumper sticker on it!

The parts being put in the GM vehicles are cheap crap. When they start building better vehicles, not just better than the last model, then maybe we'll buy them. I'm not worried about my job, I have an education.

joe2789-you ever owned a MB SL500? I have and, from my experience, strictly from a reliability standpoint, the Hyundai is just as good. I bought the Hyundai for the value, not the price. They currently offer the best value in the marketplace. I drove my Sonata for two years, put 60,000 miles on it, did nothing but change the oil the whole time I owned it, then sold it for $2,000 less than I paid for it. I have many friends that own Hyundai products and their experience has been the same.  Maybe your Hyundai issues have to do with the driver, not the car?

Carman127 - Give us  A break....The only reason you bought it is was  price .For you to compare a SL500 to a Hyundai is crazy. You said your 09 and 11 were good (you were lucky)Hyundai is dealing with so many issues(Trans problems,Engines problems and they are unable to figure out how to correct the sonata from pulling to one side.

My last two cars have both been Hyundai, an 09 Sonata and an 11 Elantra. They are as good, or better, than any car I've ever owned, which include a Mercedes-Benz SL500, a BMW 323i (which was the least reliable car I have ever owned),  plus many Honda, Ford and GM products.  By the way, both Hyundai's were built in Montgomery, Alabama.  The last so-called "American" car I owned was built in Mexico.

We need to start buying American products......Just look at the stock market.... buying Hyundai supports the Korean  economy .Once the people around you have no work soon you will have no work ......

Yea keep buying these honeys. A family member has a 2010 sonata. Rides like crap, wears out tires prematurely and constantly has to take the car back to the dealer for rear brake work. The brakes will not self adjust do to rust. Dealer charges $100 to clean them up so they will work properly. A friend of theirs has an 09 with the same issues. And don't say it's the dealer because they use 2 different dealers.
