Toyota to build a Mazda2-based Yaris in 2015?

We're pretty sure it will happen, since the latest Yaris is getting long in the tooth.

Mazda will build a new subcompact Toyota at its upcoming Mexican plant starting in 2015, Toyota said on Friday.

That new Toyota will be based on the current Mazda2, which itself is based on the Ford Fiesta. Unless Toyota comes out with a completely new model, we're certain this vehicle will be the next-generation Yaris, given the timing and Toyota's penchant for keeping its model lineup consistent. The current Yaris was refreshed for 2012 and not given a full redesign; its 1.5-liter engine and antiquated 4-speed automatic were carried over -- all the more reason to see an all-new Yaris in 2015. Toyota refused to comment when asked about this model.

While Mazda is closing its only North American plant in Michigan by year's end and moving production of its 6 sedan back to Japan, it is building a new plant in Mexico to build the smaller 2 and 3 models. When the plant is finished, Mazda will ship the "Toyota-brand vehicle" to U.S. dealers starting in summer 2015 (call it Yaris, already!). About 50,000 cars will be built for the U.S. per year, according to Toyota.

When Mazda announced it would close its Michigan plant in June 2011 -- which has built more than 1.7 million cars since 1987 -- the company cited the need to "improve production and investment efficiencies." To be specific, Mazda North America had been posting four consecutive years of losses through 2011 and began cutting U.S. employees in March.

It's a good thing Mazda North America won't be importing all of its cars from Japan. On Tuesday, Suzuki's U.S. division said it was pulling out of the country, in part because it mismanaged its shipments and was harder hit by fluctuating exchange rates than most of its domestically produced rivals.

closing the north american plant at the years end, then opening a plant in mexico in 2015 and going to make cars there to ship into north america. This is where the US Gov. needs to step up and stop letting this countries take jobs from here and taking them else where. Tell then you close that plant and put one in mexico don't plan on shipping the cars here to sale. north america is one of the largest consumers of new cars in the world. So lets start telling them what there going to do, not them tell us.

Gee, all that Toyota bashing really did not sit well with Toyota now did it, till this day there has been no proof that the excelleration problem was due to a mechanical fault, so now Mexico gets Toyota's Manufacturing business and of course We are going to climb that mountain and pound our Chest, what a joke America is becoming.

 This is same thing happened to printing companies. The Copywrite laws that mandated that anything published in this country had to be printed in this country were allowed to expire. Many printing companies closed and thousands were were put out of work. Now toyota is doing the same thing. Others will probably follow, putting more people out of work.

If you don't like the product or the company, than just STOP buying the product!!!  The problem with the auto unions will continue to plague EVERY car plant in the country. There WILL come a time when cars get too expensive and nobody can afford to buy them anymore.  It's time that we tell Detroit what we want instead of them tell us.

I read in one ad for a plant worker at a car manufacturer that they were going to play an inexperienced gopher fourty something dollars an hour. They can get the same down in Mexico for 4 or 5 dollars an hour. The people live in shacks made of old wood pallets wrapped with tar paper with one little light bulb running to it and they send their kids down the block with a bucket to fill it from the neighborhood spiquet . They will have a 199 people apply for that same job. He will work 16 hours a day, and not complain, strike , or get sick.

Trumpka is bragging that his union spent one half billion dollars to keep Obama in the White House.  So it seems that "buy American" really means pump money to Trumpka so he can purchase elections.  No thanks.

The president can't "make" private companies do what he wants- that is called communism.  The UAW strangled their own necks with pay and benefits so that now there are NO jobs. Some job is better than no job.  Giving republican minded tax breaks as incentive to keep jobs as well as allow renegotiations of union pay & benefits is what helps industries.  If you don't do that, then any country with less payroll expense will get your manufacturing plant.
Blaming the unions is crazy! Just fox network bullcrap and you people eat it up! Are you stupid? If it wasnt for the unions we would not have a middle class, no healthcare, retirement. you name it. Just like China and mexico you would work for pennies an hour and not have  a say in anything. What is wrong with your brain? Didnt you read a book in school? Dont like your house? Car? Healthcare? life style? Move to Mexico and live in a box! Its unbelievable that americans would put down unions and blame them for this mess. Its the trade agreements that were signed in the dark allowing our country to be flooded with slave labor products. Is that what you want? Wake up and dont be such idiots people! Read a friggin book on labor history and the unions, check out how the middle class was born. CHild labor was abolished, wtf is in your screwed up heads? How about standing up to the complete lies that unions did this and fight for your wages. We will never compete with SLAVE  labor pay unless you want to live in a box. STOP THE MADNESS! EDUCATION IS THE SOLUTION TO YOUR MIND POLUTION!

I have lost 2 jobs of my position being done in Hongkong/China

People, wake up.

The cost of producing something here, especially cars, has gotten out of hand. Autos, electronics, appliances, etc Some of these products don't really have a union here and they are not TOTALLY to blame. Its if I made a product here in america, and it cost 1 1/2 times for the lobor, and my competition makes it elsewhere and less costly including shipping, customs, etc. My product will be almost twice the cost on the retailers shelf. Since America buys price and not quality, I would be very stupid to think I could compete.

Yes, unions and their demands do play a big part (se the Hostess fracus), but buying price instead of quality is what fuels having it made overseas. Moreover, if a place is not a closed shop, the company must treat the employees the same regardless of union membership. Same pay, and benefits. (Thats the law)

Example: Yesterday we went to buy some outdoor Christmas lights at Walmart. They had  2 manufacturers for the style we wanted, and the product look very simular, as they MAY have been made at the same plant. One was "store brand" the other GE. Both conspicuously said "Made in China". The store brand was 60% of the GE. The GE rack was full and the store brand display was 1/2 full.
