GM Partners With Car-Sharing Company

Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet and GMC owners can now easily rent out their cars through RelayRides.

Boston-based car-sharing company RelayRides has partnered with GM to usher vehicles with OnStar technology into the realm of car-sharing, an increasingly popular alternative to car ownership or traditional car rentals.

OnStar allows potential renters to locate vehicles equipped with the service using their mobile devices. They can then open the car doors by replying to text messages.

Car sharing has gained in popularity over the past couple of years, with companies such as Zipcar and Getaround providing carless drivers with a convenient, less expensive transportation option. RelayRides, which counts GM as an investor, launched in Boston in 2010.

The benefit to car owners is that they can make some extra cash by renting out their underused vehicles. The GM-OnStar deal makes it easy for Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac owners to jump in on the trend.
