BMW Announces Recall for Turbocharged BMW, MINI Models

Cooling system issue could lead to pump smoldering, engine compartment fire

The 2012 BMW 6-Series convertible. Photo by BMW.BMW today announced a global recall of some 9,200 vehicles for a possible problem with the cooling pump. The issue affects BMW models equipped with the company's turbocharged 8- and 12-cylinder engines, as well as two Mini models. Most of the affected vehicles are model year 2012 vehicles produced around April 2011.

According to the recall notice, the circuit board for the auxiliary water pump could overheat, leading to "a smoldering of the pump or an engine compartment or vehicle fire." Models subject to the recall are as follows: 2011 BMW 5-Series and 5-Series Gran Turismo, 2012 BMW 7-Series and 6-Series convertible, and the 2012 BMW X5 and X6 as well as the 2011 MINI Cooper S and MINI John Cooper Works.

The recall will begin this month, with BMW notifying owners about the recall and dealers replacing the auxiliary water pump free of charge.

"I dont spent nothing else besides a routine maintenance" unless of course you happen to own one of those Toyota "run-a-way" Camery`s OR  Nissan Altima and Nissan Versa sedans OR the Honda Civic for issues with their side curtain air bags, just to name a few.

I think it's ridiculous if so-called patriots are telling other people what to buy.This is a free country right ? It's my own business what I buy for my money. I always buy japanese cars.Why ? Because they LAST. I dont spent nothing else besides a routine maintenance. Not mentioning much higher quality of interior and craftmanship. I was shocked when i took a closer look at american cars.Cheap plastic,cheap looking and overpriced thanks to union's overpaid employees. By the way japanese cars are built in states while american cars are often build in Canada or Mexico..... So who is more patriotic then ????

This just drives YOU crazy if you own a BMTroubleyou or any import doesn't it. How much did you pay to own that European car???..............​..lol. Oh and by-the-way RV GRAMPA, what a joke you are!!!

This is not new.  I own a Mini and this is the same recall that was started in January 2012.  It's that they now have the parts to fix the problem.  Way to stay on top of the news NBC.

We have two Toyotas; a 2009 Camry Hybrid and an 2009 Yaris. The Camry was  built in Kentucky by American labor and the Yaris was built in Japan. Guess what - We own them both free and clear. We offer no excuses and don't care what those phony patriots think or care. We will buy whatever we want to buy from whomever we please. Apparently a few million good Americans feel the same way.

BMW's are the highest maintenance cars in the world. I should know, I own one and am probably going to end up owing some of my kids as slave labor to my mechanic. Nothing more fun to drive though, so I guess I won't miss them too much.

Some seem to think this is old news and overly dramatic.  My sister's house burned down in January, thanks to the mini cooper parked in the garage.  They lost everything, including their pet and a lifetime of memories.

I drove american cars all of my life. Then in 2002 after my Buick died I bought a 1992 525i that was sitting at a kroger parking lot with 3900 on the windshied. 10 years later and a total of 266,000 miles it is still going strong. Best car I have ever owned  .BMW is " The Ultimate Driving Machine"
