Frankfurt Auto Show Preview: MINI Gets Bigger Stable
BMW to unveil 2-seat coupe and roadster models (via Autoweek)
More new models to be
unveiled at Frankfurt: As reported by Autoweek, BMW will showcase two new MINI
models -- a 2-seat coupe and a performance-oriented
roadster concept (which, as the article reports, will very likely go into
production as is).
My initial reaction to the news was why is MINI focusing on a new performance model in the current economic climate and increased attention on fuel economy, especially when it already boasts the excellent, speedy John Cooper Works lineup? But, then again, I’ve been on board with James Tate’s assertion that Americans should be learning to live with smaller cars, so I guess I should be happy that those who are willing to spend some dough on roadsters have another, tiny option.
Both the coupe and the roadster will have a sleeker, more aggressive appearance than the boxy Cooper, and specs for the coupe (expected to go for about $36,000) show a top speed of 150 mph, with a zero-to-60 mph time of less than seven seconds.
What are your thoughts on the MINI? I’ve seen a lot of comments from other posts defending big trucks and SUVs. Could you ever learn to love the little guy?
