There's now one less place you can light up: your rental car. That is, of course, if you rent from Avis or Budget beginning Oct. 1 (both companies are owned by parent company Avis Budget Group).

Following bans (stretching all the way back to 1988) on domestic flights and train travel and in many restaurants and bars across the country, Avis and Budget have fired the opening salvo for the rental car industry with across-the-board bans on smoking in their vehicles.

The restriction goes for company employees as well as renters, and is said to be a response to an overwhelming demand for smoke-free cars as well as to complaints of cars that smell like, well, smoke. Offending customers can be charged a cleaning fee of up to $250.Other rental car companies, such as Alamo and Enterprise, allow rental locations to create their own limitations on smoking in cars, but do not have a corporate policy on the subject.

Obviously, anti-smoking groups like the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids are delighted, while pro-smoking groups such as Philip Morris, well, are not. The comments are open and we want to hear your thoughts: oppressive, or just what the doctor ordered?
