Scot sets unofficial miles-per-hour record ... for speeding

By Joshua Condon Oct 1, 2009 2:58PM
You break some land-speed records and you find yourself with glory, renown, respect and possibly some sort of endorsement deal. Then there are the kinds of records, like the one attained by hairdresser Neil Purves from Cockburnspath, Scotland, that get you something else entirely: possible jail time and -- get this -- a lifetime ban from using the roads in the country.

Lifetime. As in, never again can he drive in Scotland, anywhere. And the man is only 27.

Purves was clocked on his Suzuki GSX-R 1000 sportbike (which he's since sold) doing an insane 166 mph in a 60 mph zone. 166 miles per hour -- that's a full 27 mph faster than the record for fastest steam-powered vehicle. He pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving (no kidding) in Peebles Sheriff Court and will be sentenced Oct. 28.

I like this quote from his lawyer, Graham Walker: "He undertook an advanced motorcycle training course after this incident." What for? The man already hit 166 mph -- he's pretty advanced. Were they going to teach him how to go faster?
