General Motors to Invest More Than $850 Million to Build New V8s

GM's next-generation V8s will be used in vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado pickup, shown.

General Motors Co. said Tuesday it will invest more than $850 million to upgrade five North American factories to make its next-generation V8 engines more fuel efficient.

The new V8s will differ from the current versions by using direct injection and a new combustion system, spokeswoman Sharon Basel said. The next-generation engines will also be lighter. GM will build them exclusively from aluminum, compared with the current versions' aluminum and iron makeup, Basel said. All of the engines will be able to run on E85 ethanol.

To build the engines, GM will renovate or retool powertrain factories in Tonawanda, N.Y.; Bay City, Mich.; Bedford, Ind.; Defiance, Ohio; and St. Catharines, Ontario.

GM uses its current V-8 family of engines in full-sized pickups, SUVs, vans and some performance cars, Basel said.

“There is no doubt that a major differentiator going forward will be powertrain technology,” said Michael Robinet, vice president at research firm CSM Worldwide in Northville, Mich. “Heavy investment and improved fuel economy will be on every company's agenda.”

Dont confuse European #1 (aka Renault Mengay Butt Trophy GT) with the facts, his mind is made up. Because remember, if it ain't Euro, it's $h!t. In his world, they dont need trucks with V8s since everything can be done with Mini Coopers that have a few extra hamtser wheels in them to get the extra power. Anyone who likes to drive anything that is not a Euromobile is an uneducated american redneck idiot. I guess their $h!t dont stink in europe?

I applaud GM for responding to the new generation of technologically advanced and fuel efficient engines that are being put out by Ford and European manufacturers.  The old pushrod engines of the past have done well in the past but are no longer up to snuff with the current direct injected, dual overhead cam, variable valve timing.  The new 5.0 Mustang coming out this fall will undoubtedly embarrass the Camaro and Challenger with 26 mpg and 436 hp on tap.  Long live the Pony wars! Open-mouthed

Are they going to pull money from another taxpayer funded Bailout escrow account to fund this investment?
