The fact that Toyota has had high-profile issues with unintended acceleration -- to the tune of a recall affecting 3.8 million vehicles -- is old news. What may surprise some, though, is that this issue is not restricted to Toyota alone, though the world's largest automaker does account for the lion's share of the problems.

According to meticulous research done by Consumer Reports (the magazine looked at almost 6,000 complaints, and included only those that happened at higher speeds and could be considered dangerous), Toyota vehicles (including the Lexus brand) were involved in 41 percent of relevant unintended-acceleration cases. That was higher than the next two on the list -- Ford, with 28 percent, and Chrysler, at 9 percent -- combined. Rounding out the list are General Motors, at 5 percent (disproportionately low, according to Consumer Reports, based on its market share); Honda, at 4 percent; and Nissan, at 3 percent.
