An Inconvenient Commute

Copenhagen climate talks heavy on prototypes, light on actual fleet vehicles

By Joshua Condon Dec 17, 2009 11:39AM
The New York Times Wheels blog has a quick report about some of the behind-the-scenes goings-on at the Copenhagen climate talks. The talks end tomorrow, but in the meantime, electric and hybrid manufacturers are taking the time to show off what they have -- though the the size of the respective audiences varies.

Shai Agassi, CEO of Better Place -- which, partnered with Renault, is looking to address the charging-station infrastructure problem -- has been offering test drives of the Renault Fluence ZE (video after the jump) to reporters. Renault also brought three EV concepts to the conference.

Fisker, too, is allowing test drives of its vehicles for qualified individuals, though a press pass isn't quite enough to get you behind the wheel. Rather, you have to be a member of Danish royal family, like Crown Prince Frederik.

Of course, all this eco-friendly hoopla was not without its drawbacks: Despite electric vehicles on full display, a shortage of limousines for dignitaries necessitated sending some over from Germany. I wonder how many officials offered to offset that carbon footprint to be chauffeured around Copenhagen in a Mercedes-Benz.
