All I Want for Christmas Is ... a New Jag?

Custom Jaguar XJ to be listed in Neiman Marcus holiday catalog

By Joshua Condon Oct 7, 2009 10:09AM
If you have $105,000 to spend on a holiday gift but no idea what to blow it on, Neiman Marcus has just the present for your consideration: a custom-built version of the new Jaguar XJ -- dubbed the XJL Supercharged Neiman Marcus edition -- appearing exclusively in the company's superluxe Christmas catalog. (Watch Ian Callum, design director for Jaguar Cars, discuss the newly redesigned XJ at the car's Pebble Beach reveal after the jump.)

What do you get for that kind of cash? A 6-speed ZF transmission controlling a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine, for one thing; for another, the prestige of driving one of only 50 custom coaches made for the retail giant. Some extras -- like a 5-piece set of bespoke Jaguar luggage in navy blue leather -- are also included, though there's only one choice of color scheme: a Celestial Black metallic exterior with navy and ivory leather interior, accented with matte wood.

We get that super high-end gifts are part of the Neiman Marcus mystique, but we have to ask, with unemployment in the U.S. hovering around 10% in the midst of a protracted global economic downturn, is this money-is-no-object attitude in bad taste?
