Gasoline? Diesel? Why Not Both?
Team develops new engine that runs on gas/diesel combination

Mixing gasoline and diesel normally shouldn't work. But a team form the University of Wisconsin at Madison has developed an engine that can handle the blend.
Fast Response Fuel Blending is the name of the new injection system, and the secret, apparently, is precise calibration. The engine controls the diesel spray to exacting amounts -- even on the fly, meaning the gas-to-diesel ratio can range anywhere from 85:15 to 50:50, depending on the situation -- which allows combustion of the mixture. Side effects of such precision is an engine that runs cooler (meaning less energy loss) and less wasted fuel (which translates to lower emissions and higher fuel efficiency).
The results were presented to the Energy Department yesterday, and the study's team leader reports they are regularly meeting 2010 EPA standards with the gas/diesel blend.
