5 Great Holiday Gifts
What to get the auto-obsessed on your list this year.
It’s that time of year once again. The lights are up, the stores have been regurgitating the same worn-out holiday tunes since before Halloween and you have a gift list a mile long. If that list happens to include a few automotive enthusiasts, we have some gifts worth looking into that won’t break the bank. No matter your loved one’s preference when it comes to make, model or country of origin, these picks are sure to please.Anything from the Colin McRae Store
Colin McRae was a legendary rally driver who died before his time in 2007. The guy was a genius behind the wheel and managed to take a gaggle of World Rally Championship titles during his short time on the planet. McRae was responsible for stirring up a whole new generation of WRC fans in the early '90s and raced everything from Subarus to Fords during his career. His Web site recently opened up a new online store complete with plenty of McRae-inspired garments guaranteed to please any gearhead. Check out the complete lineup here.
Eric Bana’s 'Love the Beast' DVD
Actor Eric Bana is one of the biggest car nuts in Hollywood, and the Australian has managed to hold onto his first car since the tender young age of 15. Follow Bana as the car gets built for grueling race duty in the Targa Tasmania. Perfect for anyone who’s ever loved his first car. Expect to pay around $35 for the DVD.
GoPro HD Motorsports Hero
At $300, GoPro Camera’s HD Motorsports Hero is the most expensive piece of kit on our list of goodies, but it’s worth it. Know someone who spends his time at the track? This tiny camera mounts to the exterior of a car with suction cups capable of withstanding hurricane-force winds and vibrations. Shooting in high definition, the HD Motorsports Hero can record up to 2.5 hours of footage on a single charge and around nine hours of video on a 32-gigabyte SD card. What better way to record some heroic driving action? For more information, stop by GoPro Camera's Web site.
'Forza Motorsport 3'
With Polyphony Digital’s "Gran Turismo 5" meeting delay after delay, there’s only one real racing simulator for gamers right now, and that’s "Forza Motorsport 3." With around 400 cars, players can drive their dream machines on some of the best-known race courses from around the globe. Downloadable content like new cars will keep the game play fresh for months to come, too. The virtual racer is available for around $50.00, but is compatible only with the Xbox 360, so make sure your loved one has the right system before laying down the cash.
Top Gear Box Set
Which season? Pick one. Everyone with a bent for the automotive can’t help but love the antics of Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammod. One part Monty Python and one part Monster garage with a dash of Road and Track, the show’s even entertaining for those who could care less about the motoring world. Prices are usually less than $50, even for newer seasons. You can find links to DVDs (and other Top Gear-related gifts) at the site's Shop page.
