Car and Driver Confirms Upcoming Jag F-Type to Receive a V8
Supercharged V6 engine currently slated for the car will fall to next-best "at some point" after the model's launch.
When Jaguar announced its new supercharged 3.0-liter 380-horsepower V6 engine -- derived from the company's 5.0-liter V8 -- at the Beijing Auto Show, it made clear that the mill was intended for the upcoming F-Type. One problem, though, as more than a few people pointed out: 380 horsepower isn't much for a modern sports coupe/convertible, especially from a marque like Jaguar, and especially when the Blue Oval is producing 662-horsepower Mustangs. Jaguar was quick to rectify that, confirming to Car and Driver today that a 5.0-liter V8 will make its way under the hood -- though not immediately. The unnamed source gave the time frame thusly: the F-Type, set to arrive at some point next year, will receive an 8-cylinder mill “at some point.”
Car and Driver, meanwhile, speculates that a year or two may pass before the new Jag gets its eight -- and that the incoming six may see an uptick before that happens. More specifically, according to the magazine:
It’s not known when the V8 will make its way to the F-type, nor what kind of output it will produce. Jaguar makes its 5.0-liter V8 in a variety of strengths, including a base tune of 385 horsepower; as the supercharged V6 will make 380 horsepower, we imagine the 470-horsepower flavor found in the XF Supercharged (among others) would make a good candidate for adoption by the F-type, possibly in an R or even an RS variant. Above that, Jaguar offers a 550-horsepower tune for the supercharged eight in the XKR-S.
The F-Type will hit lots next year, first as a convertible; a coupe version is slated to follow.
