Audi Releases Trailer for Truth in 24 II: Every Second Counts
By Davey G. Johnson
For the 2008 24 Heures du Mans, German automaker Audi brought all-American institution NFL Films to the fields of France with the intention of making a documentary about that year's effort against the speedier Peugeot 908s.
Fortunately for Audi, a smart tire strategy won the race. If Truth in 24 isn't quite as radical as Le Mans, blame the fact that Porsche discontinued the 914 after a short run of 1976 models. Of course, the 1970 Le Mans was won by Porsche Salzburg's red-and-white 917K, not a John Wyer Gulf-liveried model. Grand Prix is really the best flick of the three, anyway, even if it's about Formula One. Plus, you know, a young Françoise Hardy.
That said, the original Truth in 24 was a success for Audi and a pleasant, sometimes gripping look at a nail-biter of a contest.
The 2011 race could've been a grim one for Audi, too, as it lost two thirds of its three-car field to accidents. The remaining R18, the Audi Sport North America entry piloted at the end by André Lotterer, held on to win by just less than 14 seconds.
It turned out, of course, to be the final battle of the Audi-Peugeot era at Le Mans. And, once again, Audi has funded a film about it. The trailer is below.
