Report: The 7 Most Dangerous Cars on American Roads

Low scores in rollover and rear-impact in crash testing land these vehicles on the list of most treacherous rides.

Ram 1500 photo by RamTwo crossovers, two SUVs, two pickups and the Jeep Wrangler are among the vehicles deemed the most dangerous in America by the business blog 24/7 Wall Street. The website analyzed safety data compiled by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Consumer Reports, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration and J.D. Power.

"The cars with the worst scores most commonly received poor grades in the rollover and rear-impact tests," writes Michael B. Sauter of 24/7 Wall Street. Those include the Ram 1500, Mazda CX-7 and CX-9, Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab, Suzuki SX4, Nissan Pathfinder and Jeep Wrangler.

Each of these vehicles received poor or marginal ratings by the IIHS in two of the four categories it uses for crash-test evaluation. The four categories are: a head-on crash traveling at 40 mph; a side-impact crash with a 3,300-pound object hitting the vehicle at 31 mph; a rollover test in which a metal plate strikes the corner of the vehicle until it rolls over; and a rear-impact test, which gauges seat and seat belt protection against whiplash. Additionally, five of the seven most dangerous vehicles were low scorers in the J.D. Power overall Initial Quality Study, scoring three or fewer points out of five.

The IIHS's side-impact test results for the Colorado Crew Cab were particularly grim; the vehicle has received a poor rating in this category each year since 2004. The Jeep Wrangler, too, ranked poor for side impact from 2007 to 2012 and ranked marginal, the second-lowest rating, from 1997 to 2006.

As 24/7 Wall Street notes, poor safety ratings don't necessarily translate to poor sales. All seven of the most treacherous models experienced increased sales in the past year. Writes Sauter, "In all but one case ... sales grew at least 19% last year."

As a race car driver i have learned many expierences with cars. The rule of thumb is be as defensive as possible, know your equipment and limitations. Use your mirrors as intended, they are not their for show. You can judge a persons action prior to them making a decision by watching the vehicles wheels and suspension movement. ie-a studder in the steering to the left or right prior to maybe using a turn signal is a clear indicator they are going to turn in that direction, everytime. Front end nose diving, front end lifting- get to know these terms and you will have a very safe drive.

p.s. get the "F" off the phone

Let's be honest. No one buys a Jeep Wrangler for it's safety record.

It's hard to believe that the "Smart Car" wasn't listed as #1.  I saw a 35 mile an hour crash test with a small compact car and the Smart Car was completely obliterated.  You couldn't even tell it had been a car.  Anybody who buys one of these cars is not only stupid, but they also have a death wish.  I don't care if this car would get 100 miles per gallon, I'd be terrified of driving it for fear I may hit a bicyclist and come out on the short end of the wreck.

What about the Smart (not) car? I see these on the freeway all the time and fear for the people driving them. These cars offer nothing more than a hard candy shell. You'd be safer on the freeway riding a bicycle wearing a party hat.

Bottom Line... all cars are unsafe as long those driving them are unsafe.

I have a Honda Accord and a Silverado, If I were going to be in a REAL WORLD crash I would rather me & my family be in the Silverado. I saw a severe crash just last week where a E-class Mercedes rear ended a Dodge ram at about 50mph knocking the Dodge into a Rav4 in front of it. The Mercedes and the rav were destroyed while the Dodge had very minor damage, and as an added bonus the dodge passengers were the only ones that did not leave in an ambulance. I understand that some people believe that if it is in consumer reports or msnbc that it must be true, and thats ok. But if me and my Silverado have an unfortunate meeting with any car I feel pretty confident me and my family will win that battle. Drive whatever makes you happy and don't worry about articles like this.

There is NO PLACE on the roads of America for the "Smart Car", except maybe for big city streets...I cringe everytime I see one on the highway, thinking to myself what would happen if I hit that "go-kart" with my truck..."Smart Cars" are death traps and not so "Smart"...

The bigger problem is unsafe drivers. We require zero driver training before giving someone a license to drive.  No one is trained in how a car handles and reacts in different driving conditions, so it's no wonder there's so many wrecks. Plus kids shouldn't be on the road; 90% of 15 year old kids aren't mature enough to  responsibly handle a vehicle.  I live right beside a high school and see first hand what kind of idiotic driving they do when not supervised. 80mph in a 35 residential zone?  I see it all the time.   We need revised requirements with indepth driver training, and a higher age limit before it's possible to get a license.  Just showing horrific videos in "drivers ed" obviously isn't working.
