Fiat to Add In-Car Espresso Maker to 500L

Integrated Lavazza system sparks debate on potential for distracted driving.

By Joshua Condon Jul 16, 2012 11:39AM
Photo by Fiat. The need for oversized cupholders in American vehicles remains a source of derision among motoring-minded European drivers, yet it's Italian automaker Fiat that is currently angering driving purists and distracted-driving opponents alike with plans for an in-car espresso machine in its upcoming Fiat 500L.

The option to enjoy the "unique taste ... of true Italian espresso" will be available via an integrated Lavazza Coffee Experience Kit to European buyers of the 5-passenger 500L,  according to the automaker. The 500L debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March. It is expected to arrive in the U.S. beginning next year, though the decision to offer the in-car espresso kit to the American market has not yet been made, according to a company representative speaking to CNN.

In response to early criticism regarding the potential for distracted driving -- as might be expected when contemplating brewing piping-hot espresso in a multi-ton vehicle capable of highway speeds -- the Fiat representative clarified that the system could be used only "when the car is stopped," and went on to say that the machine "is quite tiny and it has a docking station in which it remains locked." All of which may or may not satisfy the distracted-driving contingency, but it certainly won't fly among those who like to think of Europeans as conscientious, engaged motorists and Americans as coddled drivers with more concern for creature comforts than spirited automobiles.

Until we up the ante and install an in-car George Foreman grill, that is.

Great, now i have to watch out for knobs making coffee while they're reading the paper, shaving, putting thier make-up on, texting and talking on their cell phone while driving, what a great idea!! Wish i thought of that!

When are people actually going to start treating a car for what it is - a way to get from one place to another safely - without doing everything possible to distract themselves.  This is ridiculous, whether it's meant to only brew when the car isn't running or not (someone will find a way to bypass it).  It's bad enough I have to deal with people who text and talk on the cell phone.  And every person I've been in a car with who says they can talk on the cell phone while driving is swerving all over the road and is too stupid to realize it.

I think the best way to get rid of distracted driving is to eliminate automatic transmissions from vehicles. When you need both hands to drive, it makes it harder to text, shave, apply make-up and eat a burger.

Ok, so texting and talking on cell phones are not good driving habits, but making coffee while you are driving down the road is OK?

OMG this is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever seen next to the VW bug having a flower vase in the car.

I can see this being abused.

But seriously being able to make coffee in your own car on long road trips would be awesome. Just stop at the rest areas and don't do this while you are driving.

Why doesn't Fiat drop this hare-brained scheme  and concentrate, for a

change, on making a car which lasts and which has better fit and finish-

-at the same (or a lesser) price?
