One of the biggest issues with buying an alternative-fuel vehicle is knowing where to fill up. While several applications are available to help avant-garde vehicle owners find fuel for their cutting-edge cars, the new Cleaner and Greener Fuels app designed by Leonardo Academy adds a few new features.

The free app is available for both iPhone and Android devices and has almost every type of alt-fuel covered: compressed natural gas, biodiesel, liquefied natural gas, E85, liquefied petroleum gas (aka propane) and hydrogen.  It uses an interactive map to help users find fueling stations, and searches can be filtered by fuel type in the User Setting menu.

In addition to allowing drivers of alt-fuel vehicles to find stations, the app also provides detailed information on fuel blends, type of payments accepted, “practical advice” on station accessibility and Web links when available. The app even includes a crowd-sourcing social-media element: Users can add to the database of stations and information about them through a dedicated website. Leonardo Academy, a nonprofit organization “dedicated to advancing sustainability by leveraging innovative tools and information to motivate the competitive market,” says that user entries are checked for accuracy before they are accepted and included.

Location information is based on an Energy Department Alternative Fuels & Advanced Vehicles Data Center database. The department has its own Alternative Fuel Locator app, and several other free apps are available for both iOS and Android devices. If you have a smartphone and one of these apps, range anxiety should never be a worry.
