Is it just me or does that Kia concept look just like an AMC Gremlin?  A funky new concept?

Think the windy city better start showing some 56-60 mpg vehicles as  5 dollar gas is around the corner. Hemi's may be great to tool around in but 125 dollar fill ups twice a week ain't gonna cut it for JOE the PLUMBER !  The marketing has been pushing it into our brains that 20 mpg is so good, well we will see when the sales start going in the tank this summer !

That was sort of my point. crossovers only came about because people wanted a more car like SUV. Hence, the growing popularity of the crossover market As you correctly pointed out, most people don't need the utility of the truck like SUV's. Most 4X4 SUV's spend at least, if I had to guess, 80 to 90% of their time on paved/maintained streets/roads and highways. So most people gravitated towards the crossover market. I am one of the few that I know that actually needs the vehicle that I got. I always had full size trucks in the past and I never thought that I would like an SUV, but after owning one, I don't want to give it up. I got the Magnum 4.7 V8 because it gets about 20-22 miles to the gallon, (about like a six cylinder), but has the power of a V8 when I need it (I've towed my double axle car trailer with a car and equipment and the Durango didn't feel like it was struggling at all). Add in around 9 1/2 inches of ground clearance and I really like the thing. True 4X4 (not that all wheel drives are necessarily bad) has got me out of some sticky situations and got some of my neighbors out of the ditch in the winter. When I have to put my foot in it on the hill, all four wheels get power at the same time. The last all wheel drive that I drove would only put power to alternating wheels, trying to get traction. Again, that is ok for paved/plowed roads, but it is just about worthless in the muck where I am at. Plus, my mother and mother in law are both disabled and my Durango is just about the right height for them to walk up to it and sit down. Getting out is easier for them also, just scoot over, put one foot down and step out. They don't have to crawl up into a bigger truck, or up and out of, a smaller car. Four doors means I can take my family where I need to, when I need to, and I can lay the seats down and have quite a bit of cargo space in the back. I've hauled everything from lumber, bags of concrete, tile, wood, tools, scrap metal, to groceries. (name it and it has probably been back there at some point, even a skunk in a trap once. I won't be doing that one again though. It took a couple of weeks to get the smell out.) A good wash and wax and the Durango still looks good too. (I keep all of my vehicles clean and maintained. Well, clean as I can, wet seasons gets the truck muddy no matter what, weekly baths are in order. Two wax jobs a year, and the truck still shines.)

The only reason the Acadia was designed and produced was because of the popularity of the SUV's.

That’s not true at all.  Again, it’s a crossover.  It was designed because of the growing popularity of the crossover.  The Acadia replaced the Envoy because SUV sales are dwindling.  The Acadia was following other successful crossovers but was the one of the first to do it with a third row.

That being stated, I test drove the new Durango and I didn't like it as much a my 2000 4X4. Where I live (in the country and at the top of a steep winding hill, sometimes I NEED a 4X4 just to get into town/work, the new Durango doesn't feel like it could cut it.) I'll keep my older truck over the new ones

The fact that a crossover is slightly less rugged off road and typically offers less towing capacity and payload is a minor downside in the general switch from body on frame to unibody.  However, the vast majority of buyers do not need those things.  An SUV is a better fit for YOUR needs based on your comment.  Unfortunately for you, there isn’t much to choose from anymore unless you want to go full size (Tahoe, Suburban).

Well, maybe I can concede to the point about it being a crossover (at least I was right about the seating arrangement) but...

The only reason the Acadia was designed and produced was because of the popularity of the SUV's.

That being stated, I test drove the new Durango and I didn't like it as much a my 2000 4X4. Where I live (in the country and at the top of a steep winding hill, sometimes I NEED a 4X4 just to get into town/work, the new Durango doesn't feel like it could cut it.) I'll keep my older truck over the new ones for several reasons. One, it's paid off, I actually own it. Two, insurance is cheaper on a 12 year old truck (liability only on a 12 year old truck compared to full coverage on a new $42,000 Citadel). Three, taxes and tags on new truck, around here it would run about four grand the first year.

If I bought a newer truck I would have a truck payment, higher insurance premiums (not just because of the newer model year, but also because I would have to get full coverage on it since the truck would have a loan on it and banks are kind of picky that way), and taxes and tags would be outrageous the first couple of years, add in the fact that new vehicles depreciate so quick, I can't figure out who would want one. But that is what these shows are about, showcasing new tech, designs, etc. That, and trying to get people fired up for the new models. That's why I like going to these shows. I might not ever come off of the wallet to buy one, but I like looking. If I see something that I like I know that in a couple of years I'll be able to find a good, quality , used vehicle at a decent price.

Don't know why when there is any kind of car show they always toss in the ricer scrap IN with the better Domestics. Not everyone admires the sissified ugliness of the jap and korean cars. Course if they weren't included there would be barrage of unbearable screaming tantrums from the need to grow up crowd.
