Audi S3 Cabriolet details released before Geneva
Ragtop gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter rated at 296 hp
The 2015 Audi S3 Cabriolet is set to debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and the automaker has just released initial details about the upcoming S-badged convertible. We've already driven the S3 sedan, so the convertible won't be too foreign, but do keep in mind that these initial specs could change when the S3 Cabriolet finally makes it to our shores.
The big news here is the softtop, which Audi says will retract in about 18 seconds and can operate while the S3 is travelling at 31 mph or less. Audi says the convertible weighs 3571 pounds, about 300 more than the 2015 S3 sedan. About 56 percent of that weight is riding on the front axle and an aluminum hood is just one of the weight-saving measures Audi employed for the top-down. Not surprisingly, the convertible hardware eats up a bit of trunk space, which totals 8.65 cubic feet with the top retracted (10.1 cubic feet with top up).
Like the sedan, the 2015 S3 Cabriolet will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 rated at 296 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, though as we learned after driving the S3 sedan the engine is easily capable of making at least 320 hp, putting it just a few horses away from the S4. Combine that with the six-speed, dual-clutch S tronic gearbox and quattro all-wheel drive, and the 2015 Audi S3 Cabriolet will accelerate from 0-62 mph in an estimated 5.4 seconds.
With the S3 sedan slated to arrive this summer, the convertible variant could arrive at the same time or shortly after. Pricing hasn't been revealed, but expect it to be a tad more than the sedan, which we estimate will cost around $40,000.
